Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah likewise transmitted it [1] through the isnād of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah—from Jaʿfar ibn Khālid ibn Sārah al-Makhzūmī al-Makkī—from his father—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar. Al-Tirmidhī graded the ḥadīth as ḥasan.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq [2] further said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim related to me, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. She said: When the news of Jaʿfar’s death reached us, we could see grief on the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A man entered and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the women have worn us out and put us to trial.” He replied, “Go back to them and silence them.” The man went away and came again with the same complaint. (She added, “Unnecessary fuss—meaning the behavior of his family—can be harmful.”) The Prophet ﷺ then said, “Go and silence them; if they refuse, throw dust into their mouths.” I said to myself, “May Allah drive you far away! By Allah, you have not spared yourself, nor are you obeying the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I also knew he would never manage to throw dust into their mouths. Ibn Isḥāq alone reports this chain; it appears in none of the standard collections.
Al-Bukhārī [3] said: Qutaybah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us; I heard Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd say: ʿAmrah told me that she heard ʿĀʾishah say: When Ibn Ḥārithah, Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah were killed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and sorrow was visible on his face. While I was peering through a crack in the door, a man came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the women of Jaʿfar …” and he mentioned their crying. He ordered him to forbid them. The man went, then returned and said, “By Allah, they have overpowered us.” She maintained that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Then throw dust into their mouths.” ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—said, “May Allah rub your nose in dust! By Allah, you will not do it, and you have only burdened the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasāʾī [4] recorded the same report through several chains from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, from ʿAmrah, from her.
Imām Aḥmad [5] said: Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us; my father narrated to us; I heard Muḥammad ibn Abī Yaʿqūb report from al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched an army, appointing Zayd ibn Ḥārithah as commander and saying, “If Zayd is killed or falls as a martyr, your commander will be Jaʿfar; if he is killed or falls as a martyr, your commander will be ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah.” They encountered the enemy: Zayd took the banner and fought until he was killed; then Jaʿfar took the banner and fought until he was killed; then ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah took it and fought until he was killed; then Khālid ibn al-Walīd took the banner and Allah granted victory at his hands. News of them reached the Prophet ﷺ, so he went out to
