Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī likewise recorded the report (1) through Qutaybah, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, with the same chain. Al-Tirmidhī then remarked, “It is ḥasan, and we know of no one who has transmitted it with a continuous isnād except Ḥammād from Maṭar.” Mālik narrated it from Rabīʿah, from Sulaymān as a mursal report, and Sulaymān ibn Bilāl also related it from Rabīʿah in mursal form.

I say: She passed away at Sarif in the year 63 AH—others say in the year 60 AH—may Allah be pleased with her.

On His ﷺ Departure from Mecca after Completing His ʿUmrah

It was mentioned earlier from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah that the Quraysh sent Ḥuwayṭib ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā to him after four days had passed, telling him to leave them in accordance with the treaty. He offered to hold the wedding banquet for his marriage to Maymūnah in their midst—seeking thereby to win their hearts—but they refused and said, “No; leave us.” So he departed, and Ibn Isḥāq (2) reports the same.

Al-Bukhārī (3) states: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā related to us, from Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, who said:

“The Prophet ﷺ performed ʿumrah in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, but the people of Mecca refused to let him enter until he negotiated with them to stay three days. When the treaty was written, they wrote, ‘This is what Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon.’ They said, ‘We do not accept this; had we known you were the Messenger of Allah we would not have prevented you from anything. Rather, you are Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh.’ He replied, ‘I am the Messenger of Allah, and I am Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh.’ Then he said to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, ‘Erase “the Messenger of Allah.”’ ʿAlī said, ‘By Allah, I will never erase it.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon took the document—though he did not write expertly—and wrote: ‘This is what Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh has agreed upon: that no one may enter Mecca except with a sheathed sword; that none of its people who wish to follow him shall be taken out; and that none of his Companions who wish to remain shall be prevented.’

“When he entered the city and the appointed term elapsed, they came to ʿAlī and said, ‘Tell your companion to leave us, for the term has expired.’ The Prophet ﷺ therefore departed. The daughter of Ḥamzah followed him, calling, ‘Uncle, Uncle!’ ʿAlī reached out, took her by the hand and said to Fāṭimah, ‘Here is your cousin’s daughter; take her.’ She carried her, and ʿAlī and Zayd then disputed over her.”

(1) Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (no. 841) and by al-Nasa’ī in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (no. 5402); the report is weak overall, but the statement “He married Maymūna while it was lawful” is soundly transmitted. (2) See Ibn Ḥishām, al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah (The Prophetic Biography), vol. 2, p. 372. (3) Narrated by al-Bukhārī (no. 4251). (4) That is, he (peace be upon him) commanded writing; otherwise his ummīyah (illiteracy) is undisputed, as affirmed by the Qur’an, and it constitutes one of the great miraculous aspects of his person and mission (peace be upon him), as recognized by Muslim scholars past and present. For a full discussion, see the chapter on his ummīyah (peace be upon him) in the introduction to Ibn Ṭulūn al-Dimashqī’s I‘lām al-Sā’ilīn ‘an Kutub Sayyid al-Mursalīn.
