Abū ʿAbd Allāh (1) said: I asked ʿAbd al-Razzāq, “Did Sufyān relate both reports—the one from ʿAmr, from Abū al-Shaʿthāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās (2), and the one from Ibn Khuthaym, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās (3)?” He replied, “Yes. The report of Ibn Khuthaym he narrated to us here—meaning in Yemen—whereas the report of ʿAmr he narrated to us there—meaning in Mecca; and both of them were recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim in their two Ṣaḥīḥs through the chain of ʿAmr ibn Dīnār.”
In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (5), through the isnād of al-Awzāʿī—‘ʿAṭāʾ informed us, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Maymūnah while he was in a state of consecration (iḥrām).
Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab said: “Ibn ʿAbbās was mistaken, even though she was his maternal aunt; he did not marry her until after he had left iḥrām.”
Yūnus (7) related, from Ibn Isḥāq: a trustworthy man told me, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, that he said, “Here is ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās claiming that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Maymūnah while he was muḥrim.” He then added: “In fact, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca, so the release from iḥrām and the marriage occurred together, and people became confused about the matter.”
Muslim and the compilers of the Sunan (8) transmit through several chains from Yazīd ibn al-Aṣamm al-ʿĀmirī, from his maternal aunt Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married me when we were both outside the state of iḥrām at Sarif.” Al-Tirmidhī, however, remarked: “More than one narrator has transmitted this ḥadīth from Yazīd ibn al-Aṣamm in mursal form, stating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Maymūnah while he was not in iḥrām.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (9) said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh [the Ḥāfiẓ] informed us; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Iṣfahānī, the ascetic, related to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Isḥāq al-Qāḍī narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us; Maṭar al-Warrāq narrated to us, from Rabīʿah ibn Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Sulaymān ibn Yasār, from Abū Rāfiʿ, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Maymūnah while he was in the state of ḥill, consummated the marriage while in ḥill, and I served as the messenger between them.”
