from the direction of Qaʿiqiʿān. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to his Companions:
“Jog round the House three times.”
Ibn ʿAbbās added, “It is not a Sunnah.”
Muslim also transmitted the report (1) through Saʿīd al-Jurayrī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥusayn, and ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Saʿīd ibn Abjar—each of them from Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—with wording to the same effect.
The majority of jurists, however, hold that jogging (raml) during ṭawāf is Sunnah, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did so in the ʿUmrat al-Qaḍāʾ and again in the ʿUmrah performed at al-Jiʿrānah. This was related by Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Mājah through ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ibn ʿAbbās (2). It is likewise established in the ḥadīth of Jābir, recorded by Muslim and others, that he ﷺ jogged during ṭawāf in the Farewell Pilgrimage (3).
For that reason ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb remarked, “Why should we jog now that Allah has strengthened Islam?” Yet he continued, “Even so, we will not abandon anything the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed.” (5) The detailed discussion belongs in the book al-Aḥkām.
What is most commonly reported from Ibn ʿAbbās is that he did not regard it as Sunnah. In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (6), through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, and ʿAṭāʾ, Ibn ʿAbbās said, “The Prophet ﷺ only jogged around the House and between Ṣafā and Marwah to show the idolaters his physical strength”—this is al-Bukhārī’s wording.
Al-Wāqidī (7) relates that once the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had completed his rites during the ʿUmrat al-Qaḍāʾ, he entered the Kaʿbah and remained inside until Bilāl, on the Prophet’s instruction, gave the adhān for ẓuhr from the roof of the Kaʿbah. Upon hearing this, ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl said, “Allah has honored Abū al-Ḥakam by sparing him from hearing this slave utter what he utters.” Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah commented, “Praise be to Allah who removed my father before he had to witness this.” Khālid ibn Asīd said, “Praise be to Allah who caused my father to die before seeing the day when Bilāl, son of Bilāl’s mother, brays atop the Kaʿbah.” Suhayl ibn ʿAmr and a group with him, when they heard it, covered their faces.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (8) observed, “Allah later honored most of them with Islam.”
I say: This is how al-Bayhaqī (9), citing al-Wāqidī’s chain, narrated the event as having taken place during the ʿUmrat al-Qaḍāʾ, whereas the more famous view is that it occurred in the Year of the Conquest. Allah knows best.
