Al-Bukhārī, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Mājah likewise transmit it (1) through the narration of Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir with the same wording.
Al-Bukhārī also states (2): Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; al-Awzāʿī informed us, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
“When the call to prayer is proclaimed, Satan turns his back and breaks wind. When the call is finished he returns; when the iqāmah is pronounced he turns away again, and when it is concluded he comes back and hovers between a person and his heart, saying, ‘Remember such-and-such, remember such-and-such,’ until the worshipper no longer knows whether he has prayed three rakʿahs or four. If he does not know whether he has prayed three or four, he should perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness.”
Al-Bukhārī narrated it in this form exclusively through this chain.
Ahmad says (3): Aswad ibn ʿĀmir related to us; Jaʿfar—meaning al-Aḥmar—related from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Anas, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Close up the rows, for Satan takes his place in the gaps.”
He also reports (4): Abān narrated to us; Qatādah narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to say:
“Align your rows, draw them close together, and keep the necks in line. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I can see Satan slipping into the openings of the row like a small black lamb.”
Al-Bukhārī further says (5): Abū Maʿmar narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us; Yūnus narrated to us, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Saʿīd, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If something passes in front of one of you while he is praying, let him repel it. If it refuses, let him repel it again. If it still refuses, then let him fight it, for it is only Satan.”
Muslim and Abū Dāwūd also record it (6) through Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl.
Imām Ahmad adds (7): Abū Aḥmad narrated to us; Masrah ibn Maʿbad narrated to us; Abū ʿUbayd, the doorkeeper of Sulaymān, narrated to us. He said:
“I saw ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yazīd al-Laythī standing in prayer. I attempted to pass in front of him, but he pushed me back and said, ‘Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to lead the dawn prayer while he was behind him. He recited, but the recitation became confused for him. When he finished he said: “If only you had seen me and Iblīs: I reached out with my hand and kept choking him until I felt the coolness of his saliva between these two fingers of mine—this thumb and the one next to it. Were it not for the supplication of my brother Solomon, he would have been left tied to one of the pillars…”’”
