and the children among them—until Maymūnah reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Sarif. There he consummated the marriage with her, after which he set out in the pre-dawn hours and traveled on until he entered Madinah.¹
By Allah’s decree Maymūnah would also die at Sarif some time later; she passed away in the very place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had married her.
[Al-Zuhrī] then relates the incident of Ḥamzah’s daughter, up to the point where he says:
And Allah, exalted be He, sent down regarding that ʿumrah:
“ The Sacred Month for the Sacred Month, and for all sacred things there is equal retaliation.” (al-Baqarah 2:194)
Thus the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ʿumrah in the very sacred month in which he had previously been turned back.
Ibn Luhayʿah has transmitted—through Abū’l-Aswad, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr—a report similar to this account. There are, moreover, many corroborating narrations. In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī², for example, through the chain of Falyḥ ibn Sulaymān → Nāfiʿ → Ibn ʿUmar, it is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for ʿumrah, but the unbelievers of Quraysh blocked his path to the House. He therefore sacrificed his animals and shaved his head at Ḥudaybiyyah, and negotiated with them that he would perform ʿumrah the following year, bearing no arms except swords and remaining only as long as they allowed. The next year he carried out that ʿumrah, entering Mecca in accordance with the pact; after he had stayed three days they ordered him to leave, and he left.
Al-Wāqidī³ said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nāfiʿ narrated to me from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “This was not a compensatory ʿumrah (ʿumrat al-qaḍāʾ); rather, it was a stipulation laid upon the Muslims that they should perform ʿumrah the following year, in the same month in which the polytheists had barred them.”
Abū Dāwūd⁴ reported: al-Nufaylī narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Salamah to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn. I heard Abū Ḥāḍir al-Ḥimyarī relate to my father, Maymūn ibn Mihrān: “I set out for ʿumrah in the year when the Syrians besieged Ibn al-Zubayr in Mecca, and some men of my clan sent sacrificial animals with me. When we reached the Syrian troops they prevented us from entering the Sanctuary, so I slaughtered the animals on the spot, came out of iḥrām, and returned home. The following year I went out to make up my ʿumrah and came to Ibn ʿAbbās and asked him about it. He said, ‘Replace the sacrificial animals, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered his Companions to replace the animals they had slaughtered in the year of Ḥudaybiyyah, during the compensatory ʿumrah.’ ” This report is unique to Abū Dāwūd, transmitted from Abū Ḥāḍir (ʿUthmān ibn Ḥāḍir) al-Ḥimyarī on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī⁵ said: al-Ḥākim related to us, al-Aṣamm related to us, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār narrated to us, Yūnus ibn Bukayr from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: ʿAmr ibn Maymūn told me: “My father was often asked, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ replace the sacrificial animals he had slaughtered when the polytheists kept him from the House?’ He could find no clear answer until I heard him ask Abū Ḥāḍir…”
