Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah (1) relates, on the authority of al-Zuhrī:
The following year after Ḥudaybiyyah the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out to perform ʿumrah, in Dhū’l-Qaʿdah of the seventh year— the very month in which the idolaters had barred him from the Sacred Mosque. When he reached Yaʾjaj he laid aside all the heavy arms—shields, cuirasses, lances, and arrows—and entered carrying only the traveller’s weapons: their swords.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already dispatched Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib ahead of him to Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith al-ʿĀmiriyyah to ask for her hand. She placed the matter in the care of al-ʿAbbās—who was married to her sister, Umm al-Faḍl bint al-Ḥārith—so al-ʿAbbās solemnized the marriage between her and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Upon reaching Mecca the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed his Companions: “Bare your shoulders and quicken your pace in the circumambulation,” so that the idolaters might see their vigor and strength; he countered them with every stratagem he could. The people of Mecca—men, women, and children—crowded together to watch the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions making ṭawāf around the House, while ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah, sword at his side, chanted rajaz in front of the Prophet ﷺ: (2)
Clear the unbelievers’ sons from his path;
Stand aside—for every good lies in his Messenger!
The All-Merciful has sent down in His Revelation,
On parchments recited to His Messenger.
Today we shall strike you for its interpretation
Just as we struck you for its revelation—
Blows that lop the head from where it rests
And make a comrade forget his comrade.
Certain notables among the idolaters avoided the sight of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ out of spite, fury, rivalry, and envy, and withdrew to al-Khandamah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained in Mecca for three nights— the final term stipulated in the Ḥudaybiyyah accord. When dawn broke on the fourth day, Suhayl ibn ʿAmr and Ḥuwayṭib ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā came to him while he was sitting among the Anṣār conversing with Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah. Ḥuwayṭib called out, “We appeal to God and to the treaty: leave our land, for the three days have elapsed!” Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah retorted, “You lie—may you be bereaved of your mother! This is neither your land nor your fathers’. By Allah, he will not leave.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then addressed Suhayl and Ḥuwayṭib: “I have married a woman among you. What harm is there if I remain until I consummate the marriage, and we prepare food so you and we may eat together?” They replied, “We implore you by God and by the pact: depart from us.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ therefore ordered Abū Rāfiʿ to announce the departure. He mounted and rode until he halted in the valley of Sarif, where the Muslims encamped. He left Abū Rāfiʿ behind to escort Maymūnah, and remained at Sarif until she arrived—[though Maymūnah] and those with her had met with hardship and abuse from the foolish among the idolaters and from
