Abu Dawud likewise transmitted the report (1) through the route of Hammad ibn Salamah, from Ibn Ishaq.
Ibn Majah related it (2) from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, from Abu Khalid al-Ahmar, from Ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar, from Zayd ibn Dumayrah, from his father and his uncle, though he mentioned only part of the account.
The sound wording is that given by Ibn Ishaq: from Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar, from Ziyad ibn Saʿd ibn Dumayrah, from his father and his grandfather.
Abu Dawud also recorded it (3) through the path of Ibn Wahb, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith, from Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar, from Ziyad ibn Saʿd ibn Dumayrah, from his father and his grandfather, in substance as cited above.
Ibn Ishaq said (4): “Salim Abū al-Naḍr narrated to me that they would not accept the blood-money until al-Aqraʿ ibn Habis stood up, withdrew with them in private and said, ‘People of Qays, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has asked you for the slain man, that you leave him to him so that he may reconcile people by means of him, yet you have withheld him. Are you not afraid that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may become angry with you and that Allah will become angry because of his anger, or that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may curse you and Allah will curse you on account of that curse? By Allah, you will hand him over to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or I shall come with fifty men from Banū Tamīm [all of them] to testify that the slain man was a disbeliever who never prayed, and I will shed his blood outright.’ When he said this to them, they accepted the blood-money.” (This isnād is broken and severely incomplete.)
Ibn Ishaq also narrated (5), on the authority of one he considered trustworthy, from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, that when Mukhallim sat before him—may Allah have mercy on them—he said to him,
“You granted him security in Allah’s name and then killed him?!”
He thereupon invoked a curse upon him. Al-Ḥasan continued: “By Allah, Mukhallim survived only seven days before he died. They buried him, and the earth spat him out; they buried him again, and the earth spat him out; they buried him a third time, and the earth spat him out, so they heaped stones over him until they covered him.”
When this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he said,
“The earth closes over people far worse than him, but Allah wished to admonish you concerning the sanctity of one another’s blood by showing you what occurred with him.”
Ibn Jarir reported (6): Wakiʿ told us, Jarir told us, from Ibn Ishaq, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Mukhallim ibn Jathamah on an expedition. ʿĀmir ibn al-Aḍbaṭ met them and gave the greeting of Islam—there had been a lingering grudge between them from the Age of Ignorance—so Mukhallim shot him with an arrow and killed him. News of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and ʿUyaynah and al-Aqraʿ spoke about the matter. Al-Aqraʿ said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, establish a precedent today and revoke it tomorrow.’
ʿUyaynah said, ‘By Allah, I will not relent until his women taste bereavement as my women have tasted it.’
Mukhallim then arrived wrapped in two striped cloaks and sat before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, seeking that he pray forgiveness for him,
so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
