Then Abū Dāwūd said (1): Wahb ibn Baqiyyah narrated to us; Khālid narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, that a Jewish woman at Khaybar presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a roasted sheep, in agreement with Jābir’s report. Bishr ibn al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr ate from it, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ sent for the woman and said,
“What prompted you to do what you did?”
He then related the incident much as Jābir had, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that she be put to death. This version makes no mention of cupping.
Al-Bayhaqī (2) said: We also transmitted it through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. He added: It is possible that she was not executed at first, but that when Bishr ibn al-Barāʾ died, he commanded her execution.
Al-Bayhaqī (3) likewise related—through ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik—that a Jewish woman presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a roasted sheep at Khaybar. He asked,
“What is this?”
She replied, “A gift,” being careful not to say “charity,” lest he refuse to eat.
He and his Companions then ate, after which he said, “Stop!”
He turned to the woman and asked,
“Did you poison this sheep?”
She said, “Who told you that?”
He answered, “This bone”—the leg bone—“here in my hand.”
She said, “Yes.”
He asked, “Why?”
She replied, “I wanted, if you were a liar, that the people might rest from you; and if you were a Prophet, the poison would not harm you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then had himself cupped on the upper back and ordered his Companions to do the same; some of them died. Al-Zuhrī said: She later embraced Islam, so the Prophet ﷺ spared her. Al-Bayhaqī remarked: This is a mursal report, and it may be that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān actually took it from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh—may Allah be pleased with him.
Ibn Luhayʿah narrated—from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah—and likewise Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from al-Zuhrī, that they said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar and had slain some of its people, Zaynab bint al-Ḥārith the Jewess—niece of Marḥab—sent to Ṣafiyyah a roasted sheep which she had poisoned, placing an extra amount in the shoulder and foreleg, for she had heard that these were the parts the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved most. The Prophet ﷺ entered upon Ṣafiyyah accompanied by Bishr ibn al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr, one of the Banū Salimah. The roasted sheep was set before them; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the shoulder and bit into it, and Bishr took a bone and bit into it as well. When the Prophet ﷺ swallowed his morsel, Bishr likewise swallowed what was in his mouth.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said,
“Lift your hands, for the shoulder of this sheep is informing me that it is poisoned.”
Bishr ibn al-Barāʾ said, “By Him who has honoured you, I felt the same in the bite I took, but nothing kept me from spitting it out except my reluctance to spoil your meal. When I saw that you had swallowed your portion, I did not wish to spare myself while you did not, and I hoped that you would not have swallowed it if the poison were lethal.”
Bishr had not risen from his place before his complexion turned the colour of a green cloak, and his pain grew so intense that he could not move unless someone moved him.
Al-Zuhrī said: Jābir reported that the Prophet ﷺ then had himself cupped
