“…it is poisoned.’
He then said to her, ‘What made you do what you did?’
She replied, ‘I wanted to find out: if you were a Prophet, Allah would make it known to you; and if you were an impostor, I would free the people from you.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took no action against her. Abū Dāwūd recorded this [1] through Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān.
Al-Bayhaqī [2] also transmitted a similar report through ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Naḍrah, from his father, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh.
Imām Aḥmad [3] said: Surayj narrated to us; ʿAbbād narrated to us; from Hilāl—meaning Ibn Khabbāb—from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās: A Jewish woman presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a poisoned sheep. He sent for her and said,
‘What made you do what you did?’
She answered, ‘I wished—or intended—that if you really were a Prophet, Allah would inform you of it; and if you were not, I would rid the people of you.’
Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt any effects from that poison, he would have himself cupped. On one occasion he set out on a journey, and when he entered the state of iḥrām he again felt its effects, so he had himself cupped. Aḥmad alone relates this report, and its chain is sound.
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs [4] there is a narration from Shuʿbah, through Hishām ibn Zayd, from Anas ibn Mālik: A Jewish woman brought the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a poisoned sheep. He ate from it, and she was brought before him. He questioned her and she said, ‘I wanted to kill you.’ He replied,
‘Allah would never give you power over me,’
—or he said, ‘over that.’ They asked, ‘Shall we not kill her?’ He said, ‘No.’ Anas added, ‘I continued to recognize its effect in the soft palate of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’
Abū Dāwūd [6] said: Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-Mahrī related to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; Yūnus informed me, from Ibn Shihāb, who said: Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh used to recount that a Jewish woman from Khaybar poisoned a roasted sheep and presented it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the foreleg, ate from it, and a group of his Companions ate with him. Then he said to them,
‘Raise your hands.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for the woman, summoned her, and asked,
‘Did you poison this sheep?’
The Jewish woman said, ‘Who told you?’
He replied,
‘This piece in my hand has informed me’—meaning the foreleg.
She said, ‘Yes.’
He asked,
‘What made you do that?’
She replied, ‘I thought: if you are a Prophet, it will not harm you; and if you are not, we will be rid of you.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pardoned her and did not punish her. Some of his Companions who had eaten from the sheep died. Because of what he had eaten, the Prophet ﷺ had himself cupped on the upper back; Abū Hind performed the cupping with a horn and a blade. He was a client of Banū Bayāḍah of the Anṣār.
