with his left hand.”
This chain fulfils the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, and the ḥadīth is found in Ṣaḥīḥ collections through another route as well (1).
Imām Aḥmad also transmits—through Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Ḥakīm, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever eats with his left hand, Satan eats with him; and whoever drinks with his left hand, Satan drinks with him.” (2)
Imām Aḥmad further reports: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar told us; Shuʿbah narrated from Abū Ziyād al-Ṭaḥḥān, who said:
I heard Abū Hurayrah say—on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ—that he saw a man drinking while standing. He said to him, “Spit it out!” The man asked, “Why?” He replied, “Would it please you if a cat drank with you?” The man answered, “No.” He said, “Then someone worse than a cat has drunk with you—Satan.” This wording is unique to Aḥmad through this chain.
He (Aḥmad) also said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated from al-Zuhrī, from a man, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If the one who drinks while standing knew what is entering his belly, he would certainly vomit it up.”
He added: ʿAbd al-Razzāq also related—from Maʿmar, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ—a narration identical to that of al-Zuhrī (5).
Imām Aḥmad likewise states: Mūsā narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us, from Abū l-Zubayr, who said that he asked Jābir, “Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ say:
‘When a man enters his house and mentions the name of Allah as he enters and as he eats, Satan says, “You have no place to spend the night here and no supper.” But when he enters without mentioning the name of Allah on entering, Satan says, “You have secured lodging,” and if he neglects to mention the name of Allah at his meal, Satan says, “You have secured lodging and supper as well.”?’”
He replied, “Yes.”
Al-Bukhārī also reports: Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿAbdah informed us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When the upper rim of the sun rises, refrain from prayer until it has fully appeared; and when its upper rim sets, refrain from prayer until it has fully disappeared. Do not schedule your prayers for the moment of sunrise or sunset, for the sun rises between the two horns of Satan”—or he said “of the Satan”; Hishām was uncertain which wording the Prophet used.
