Burda transmitted—on the authority of Abū Mūsā—who said:
“When news of the Prophet’s emergence ﷺ reached us while we were in Yemen, my two brothers and I set out to emigrate to him; I was the youngest of them. One of them was Abū Burda and the other Abū Ruhm. He (the narrator) said either, ‘We were a few,’ or, ‘We were fifty-three—or fifty-two—men of my people.’ We boarded a ship, and the vessel carried us to the Negus in Abyssinia, where we met Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib. We stayed with him until we all traveled on together and reached the Prophet ﷺ just as he had conquered Khaybar. Some people began saying to us—the people of the ship—‘We preceded you in the Hijrah.’
Āsmāʾ bint ʿUmays, who had come with us, visited Ḥafṣah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ; she, too, had emigrated to the Negus. ʿUmar entered upon Ḥafṣah while Āsmāʾ was with her, and when he saw Āsmāʾ he asked:
‘Who is this?’
She replied, ‘Āsmāʾ bint ʿUmays.’
ʿUmar said, ‘The Abyssinian? The seafarer?’
Āsmāʾ answered, ‘Yes.’
He said, ‘We preceded you in the Hijrah, and we are therefore more entitled to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than you.’
She grew angry and said, ‘No, by Allah! You were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; he fed your hungry and taught your ignorant, while we were in a land—indeed, a land of distance and hostility—in Abyssinia, all for the sake of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. By Allah, I will neither eat nor drink until I mention what you have said to the Prophet ﷺ and ask him. By Allah, I will neither lie, nor swerve, nor add to it.’
When the Prophet ﷺ came, she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, ʿUmar has said such-and-such.’
He asked, ‘What did you reply to him?’
She said, ‘I replied such-and-such.’
He said, ‘He and his companions have only one migration, whereas you, the people of the ship, have two migrations.’
She continued, ‘I saw Abū Mūsā and the other people of the ship coming to me in groups asking me about this ḥadīth; there was nothing in the world that made them happier or that they held dearer than what the Prophet ﷺ had said to them.’
Abū Burda said that Āsmāʾ declared, ‘I saw Abū Mūsā, and he would continually ask me to repeat this ḥadīth.’
Abū Burda also related from Abū Mūsā that the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘I surely recognize the voices of the Ashʿarī companions reciting the Qur’an when they arrive at night, and I can locate their dwellings by those voices reciting the Qur’an at night—even though I did not see where they encamped by day. Among them is Ḥakīm [ibn Ḥizām]; when he meets the enemy—or, he said, the cavalry—he says to them, “My companions bid you to wait for them.”’
Muslim likewise narrated this ḥadīth (1) from Abū Kuraib and ʿAbd Allāh b. Barrād, both from Abū Usāmah.
Al-Bukhārī then said (2): Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth narrated to us; Burayd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Burda narrated to us, from Abū Burda, from Abū Mūsā, who said: ‘We came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had conquered Khaybar, and he allotted shares to us; he allotted nothing to anyone else who had not been present at the conquest.’ Al-Bukhārī alone reported this; Muslim did not (3).
