As for the slaves and the women who were present at Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave them a gratuity (1) from the spoils but did not grant them an official share.
Abū Dāwūd (2) said: “Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; Bishr ibn al-Muḍaffal narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Zayd, who said: ʿUmayr, the freedman of Abū al-Laḥm, related to me:
‘I was at Khaybar with my masters. They spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about me, so he ordered that I be fitted with a sword; it was so long that I dragged it on the ground. When he was told that I was a slave, he granted me a portion of assorted goods.’
Al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī (3) also transmitted it from Qutaybah, from Bishr ibn al-Muḍaffal [with the same wording, and al-Tirmidhī graded it “ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ”]. Ibn Mājah (4) reported it as well, from ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, from Wakīʿ, from Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Muḥammad ibn Zayd ibn al-Muhājir ibn Qunfudh, from ʿUmayr, with the same chain.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq (5) said: “Women, too, were present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Khaybar, and he gave them a gratuity [from the fayʾ] (6) but did not assign them a share. Sulaimān ibn Saḥīm told me, from Umayyah bint Abī al-Ṣalt, from a woman of Banū Ghifār—he mentioned her name—who said:
‘I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group of women from Banū Ghifār and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we wish to accompany you on this expedition”—he was heading for Khaybar—“so that we may treat the wounded and help the Muslims as best we can.” He replied, “With the blessing of Allah.”
‘So we set out with him. I was a young girl [of tender age], and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated me behind him on the saddle-bag of his mount. By Allah, he did not dismount until dawn; when he made the camel kneel (7) I climbed down from the saddle-bag and found blood upon it—this was the first menstruation I had ever had.
‘I clung to the camel in embarrassment. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw my condition and noticed the blood, he asked, “What is the matter with you? Have you begun menstruating?” I replied, “Yes.” He said, “Take care of yourself, then take a vessel of water, put some salt in it, wash from the saddle-bag whatever the blood has touched, and then return to your mount.”
‘When Allah granted the conquest of Khaybar, he allotted us a gift from the fayʾ, and he took this necklace you see on my neck, gave it to me, and fastened it around my neck with his own hand. By Allah, it will never leave me [ever].’ It remained on her neck until she died, and she instructed that it be buried with her.
‘She would never perform the ritual bath after menstruation without adding salt to the water, and she directed that salt be placed in the water used to wash her when she died.’”
