Nāfiʿ relates—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar—that he said:
When Khaybar was conquered, the Jews asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to allow them to remain there on the understanding that they would cultivate the land for half of its yield. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “I will let you stay on those terms for as long as we wish.” They continued under that arrangement: the dates were distributed to the military shares from one-half of Khaybar, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the one-fifth (khums). From that khums he allotted each of his wives one hundred wāsaqs of dates and twenty wāsaqs of barley.
When ʿUmar resolved to expel the Jews, he sent word to the wives of the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Whoever among you wishes that I assign to her—by assessment—date-palms yielding one hundred wāsaqs, together with the ownership of their trunks, land, and water, and from the farmland a holding yielding twenty wāsaqs of barley, let me do so. Whoever prefers to keep her existing share in the khums as it is, let that remain in place.”
Abū Dāwūd (1) also transmitted, through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: Nāfiʿ related to me from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, that ʿUmar proclaimed, “People, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dealt with the Jews of Khaybar on condition that he could expel them whenever he wished. Whoever owns property, let him attend to it, for I am expelling the Jews.” And he expelled them.
Al-Bukhārī (2) said: Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us from Yūnus, from Ibn Shihāb, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, that Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim informed him: “I and ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān walked to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘You have given the sons of al-Muṭṭalib a share from the khums of Khaybar and left us out, even though we and they occupy the same position with you.’ He replied, ‘The sons of Hāshim and the sons of al-Muṭṭalib are but one.’” Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim added, “The Prophet ﷺ did not allot anything to the sons of ʿAbd Shams or the sons of Nawfal.”
In another wording (3) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The sons of Hāshim and the sons of al-Muṭṭalib are one entity; they never left us—neither in the Age of Ignorance nor in Islam.”
Al-Shāfiʿī commented: “They entered alongside them into the mountain pass and supported them, both in their days of unbelief and in Islam.”
I (the author) say: Abū Ṭālib censured the sons of ʿAbd Shams and the sons of Nawfal when he said:
“May Allah repay ʿAbd Shams and Nawfal on our behalf
With an evil punishment—swift, not deferred.”
Al-Bukhārī (4) also said: al-Ḥasan ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Sābiq narrated to us; Zāʾidah narrated to us from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar who said: “On the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted two shares to a horse and one share to a foot-soldier.” Nāfiʿ explained it, saying, “If a man had a horse, he received three shares; if he had no horse, he received one.”
