Anas said:
“A comely slave-girl fell to Dihyah’s lot, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bought her for seven slaves and then handed her over to Umm Sulaym that she might dress and prepare her.” Ḥammād added, “I think he also said, ‘She spent her waiting-period in Umm Sulaym’s house’—she was Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy.” This report is recorded only by Abū Dāwūd.
Ibn Isḥāq (1) relates: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ captured al-Qamūṣ, the fortress of the Banū Abī al-Ḥuqayq, Ṣafiyyah daughter of Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab was brought to him together with another woman. Bilāl—who was escorting them—passed them by some of the slain Jews. When the woman accompanying Ṣafiyyah saw the corpses she screamed, struck her face, and scattered dust upon her head. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw her he said, “Take this she-devil away from me.” He then ordered that Ṣafiyyah be placed behind him and cast his cloak over her; the Muslims understood thereby that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had chosen her for himself.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said to Bilāl—as I have been informed—after witnessing what that Jewish woman had done: “Has mercy been stripped from your heart, O Bilāl, that you lead two women past the corpses of their menfolk?”
While still a bride of Kinānah ibn al-Rabīʿ ibn Abī al-Ḥuqayq, Ṣafiyyah had seen in a dream that the moon fell into her lap. She related the vision to her husband, who said, “This can mean nothing but that you desire Muḥammad, the king of the Ḥijaz.” He then struck her, leaving her eye bruised. When she was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the mark was still visible, and he asked her, “What is this?” She told him the story.
Ibn Isḥāq (2) reports: Kinānah ibn al-Rabīʿ, who had custody of the treasure of Banū al-Naḍīr, was brought before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He questioned him about it, but Kinānah denied any knowledge. A Jewish man then came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “I have seen Kinānah frequenting this ruined building every morning.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Kinānah, “If we find it with you, shall I kill you?” He replied, “Yes.” The ruin was excavated and part of the treasure was uncovered. When the Prophet ﷺ asked about the remainder, Kinānah refused to disclose it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ therefore handed him over to al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, saying, “Torture him until you have extracted what he knows.” Al-Zubayr kept striking flint against his chest until he was near death; the Prophet ﷺ then delivered him to Muḥammad ibn Maslamah, who beheaded him in retaliation for his brother Maḥmūd ibn Maslamah.

Ibn Isḥāq (3) continues: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laid siege to the people of Khaybar in their two fortresses, al-Waṭīḥ and al-Sulālim, until
