Khaybar knows full well that I am Kaʿb—
the reliever of distress, bold and staunch;
When battle is scattered and followed by battle,
beside me is a sword, red-gleaming and keen;
I will tread you down till the hard-necked yield;
we grant due recompense, or the booty returns,¹
With a relentless hand that merits no rebuke.
He (the narrator) said: Marhab kept chanting and calling out, “Is there no challenger?”
[The Messenger of Allah ﷺ] asked, “Who will face him?”
Muhammad ibn Maslamah replied, “I will, O Messenger of Allah. By Allah, I am the bereaved avenger—yesterday they killed my brother.”
He said, “Go to him. O Allah, help him against him.”
When the two drew near, an ʿUmriyyah tree² of the desert milkweed³ stood between them. Each man used it for cover; whenever one of them took shelter behind it, the other hacked away whatever branches lay between them until they faced each other directly and only a trunk remained, like a standing man with no limb upon it.
Marhab then charged Muhammad ibn Maslamah and struck, but he warded it off with his shield; Marhab’s sword stuck fast in the shield, which clamped down upon it. Muhammad ibn Maslamah thereupon struck him and killed him.
Imām Aḥmad⁴ related the incident in similar terms through Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Isḥāq.
Ibn Isḥāq⁵ said: Some people claim that when Muhammad dealt the blow he chanted:
“Khaybar knows that I press on—

Al-Wāqidī⁶ likewise reported—from Jābir and others among the early generation—that Muhammad ibn Maslamah killed Marhab. Al-Wāqidī adds that Muhammad severed Marhab’s legs. Marhab pleaded, “Finish me off.” Muhammad replied, “No—taste death as Mahmūd ibn Maslamah tasted it.” ʿAlī passed by and cut off his head; they then disputed before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the spoils. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ awarded Muhammad ibn Maslamah Marhab’s sword, spear, mail-coif, and helmet.
Inscribed upon the sword were the words:
“This is Marhab’s sword;
he who tastes it, perishes.”
Ibn Isḥāq⁷ further mentioned that Marhab’s brother, Yāsir, came out after him calling, “Is there any challenger?” Hishām ibn ʿUrwah maintained that al-Zubayr went out to meet him. His mother, Ṣafiyyah bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, exclaimed, “My son will be killed, O Messenger of Allah.” He replied—
