Year Seven after the Hijrah – The Expedition of Khaybar at Its Outset
Shuʿbah narrated on the authority of al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, regarding the Almighty’s words:
“And He rewarded them with a near victory.” (Qur’an 48:18)
He said, “That victory was Khaybar.”
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah reports that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from al-Hudaybiyah he remained in Madinah for about twenty days—and then set out for Khaybar, the conquest Allah had promised him.
He also transmitted from al-Zuhrī that Khaybar was opened in the sixth year; the sound view, however, is that it occurred at the beginning of the seventh, as already noted.
Ibn Isḥāq states: “After coming back from al-Hudaybiyah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in Madinah through Dhul-Hijjah and part of Muḥarram, then marched to Khaybar during the remainder of Muḥarram.”
Yūnus ibn Bukayr relates—from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from Marwān and al-Miswar—that they said: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned in the year of al-Hudaybiyah, Sūrah al-Fath was revealed to him between Mecca and Madinah. He reached Madinah in Dhul-Hijjah and remained there until he set out for Khaybar in Muḥarram. He encamped at al-Rajīʿ, a valley lying between Khaybar and Ghatafān, fearing that Ghatafān might come to reinforce them. He spent the night there, and at daybreak advanced upon them.”
Al-Bayhaqī remarks that al-Wāqidī narrated the same purport from his teachers: that the Prophet set out at the beginning of the seventh year after the Hijrah.
ʿAbd Allah ibn Idrīs reports from Ibn Isḥāq that ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Bakr informed him: “The conquest of Khaybar occurred at the close of Muḥarram, and the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah toward the end of Ṣafar.”
Ibn Hishām adds: “He left Numaylah ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Laythī in charge of Madinah.”
