The Muslims objected: “By Allah, we will not have it written except, ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.’” The Prophet ﷺ then said, “Write: ‘In Your name, O Allah.’”
He continued, “This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, stipulates.”
Suhayl retorted, “By Allah, had we known you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have turned you away from the House nor fought you. Instead, write: ‘Muhammad son of ʿAbdullah.’”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “By Allah, I am indeed the Messenger of Allah even though you deny me—write: ‘Muhammad son of ʿAbdullah.’”
Al-Zuhrī commented: He did so in keeping with his statement, “They will not ask me for any clause that exalts the sanctities of Allah without my granting it to them.”
The Prophet ﷺ then said, “On the condition that you allow us free access to the House so that we may circumambulate it.”
Suhayl answered, “By Allah, the Arabs will not say we were forced into it; that will be next year.” So it was written.
Suhayl continued, “And that no man of ours who comes to you—even if he is upon your religion—shall be kept with you; you must return him to us.”
The Muslims protested, “Glory be to Allah! How can he be sent back to the polytheists when he has come as a Muslim?”
While this was happening, Abū Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn ʿAmr appeared, dragging his chains. He had slipped out from the lower part of Mecca and hurled himself into the midst of the Muslims.
Suhayl said, “This man, O Muhammad, is the first concerning whom I demand the stipulation—you must return him to me.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied, “We have not yet finalized the document.”
Suhayl said, “By Allah, then I will never make any agreement with you.”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Grant him to me.”
Suhayl answered, “I will not grant him to you.”
The Prophet repeated, “Indeed—grant him.”
He replied, “I will not.”
Mikraz interjected, “No—we have granted him to you.”
Abū Jandal cried out, “O assembly of Muslims, am I to be returned to the idolaters when I have come as a Muslim? Do you not see what I have endured?” —he had been severely tortured for Allah’s sake—
ʿUmar reported: I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Are you not truly the Prophet of Allah?” He answered, “Indeed.” I said, “Are we not upon the truth, and our enemy upon falsehood?” He replied, “Indeed.” I asked, “Then why are we yielding in our religion?” He said, “I am the Messenger of Allah; I do not disobey Him, and He will help me.” I said, “Did you not tell us we would come to the House and circumambulate it?” He answered, “Yes, but did I tell you that we would come this year?” I said, “No.” He said, “You will surely come to it and circumambulate it.”
Then I went to Abū Bakr and asked, “O Abū Bakr, is he not truly the Prophet of Allah?” He said, “Yes.” I asked, “Are we not upon the truth and our enemy upon falsehood?” He said, “Yes.” I said, “Then why are we giving ground in our religion?” He replied, “Man, he is the Messenger of Allah; he does not disobey his Lord, and He will aid him. Hold fast to his stirrup, for by Allah he is upon the truth.” I said, “Did he not tell us we would come to the House and circumambulate it?” He answered, “Indeed, but did he say you would come this year?” I said, “No.” He said, “You will surely come to it and circumambulate it.”
Al-Zuhrī said: ʿUmar later remarked, “Because of that I performed many deeds (of expiation).”
When the treaty had been concluded, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his Companions, “Rise, slaughter your sacrificial animals, and shave.” By Allah, not one of them stood, though he said it three times. When no one responded, he entered upon Umm Salamah and told her what he had faced from the people. Umm Salamah said, “O Prophet of Allah, would you like them to comply? Go out, say nothing to any of them, slaughter your camel, and call your barber to shave you.” He went out and spoke to no one until he had done so—he slaughtered his camel and summoned his barber, who shaved him. When the Companions saw that, they rose, slaughtered, and began shaving one another, to the point that some nearly killed each other out of grief.
Then believing women came to him, and Allah revealed
