Muslim likewise relates (1) from Salamah that he pledged his allegiance three times—once with the first group, once with those in the middle, and once with the last.
Muslim also transmits (2) from Maʿqil ibn Yasār that he was holding back the branches of the tree from the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ face while the Prophet was accepting the people’s pledge. The first to pledge to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that day was Abū Sinān—Wahb ibn Miḥṣan, the brother of ʿUkkāshah ibn Miḥṣan; some, however, say it was Sinān ibn Abī Sinān.
Al-Bukhārī states (3): Shuʿjāʿ ibn al-Walīd narrated to us—al-Naḍr ibn Muḥammad heard it from him—Ṣakhr ibn al-Rabīʿ narrated to us—from Nāfiʿ who said:
“People claim that Ibn ʿUmar accepted Islam before his father ʿUmar, but that is not so. On the day of al-Hudaybiyah ʿUmar sent ʿAbd Allāh to fetch a horse he kept with a man from the Anṣār so that he might fight on it, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taking the pledge beneath the tree and ʿUmar knew nothing of it. ʿAbd Allāh therefore pledged allegiance. [He then went to the horse, brought it to ʿUmar—who was already putting on his armour— and told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taking the pledge beneath the tree].” (4)
He added: “So ʿUmar went back with him until he, too, pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This is the incident that makes people think Ibn ʿUmar became Muslim before his father.” (5)
Hishām ibn ʿAmmār said: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us—ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-ʿUmarī narrated to us—he informed me, on the authority of Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar:
“The people who were with the Prophet ﷺ at al-Hudaybiyah had scattered in the shade of the trees. Suddenly they were seen crowding around the Prophet ﷺ. ʿUmar said, ‘ʿAbd Allāh, look into what is happening—why have the people gathered around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ He went and found them pledging allegiance, so he pledged, then returned to ʿUmar, who came out and pledged as well.” Al-Bukhārī alone records this report (6) through these two chains.
Account (7) of al-Bukhārī’s wording of the ʿUmrah of al-Hudaybiyah
In the Book of Maghāzī (8) he says: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us—Sufyān narrated to us—I heard al-Zuhrī relate this ḥadīth; I memorised part of it, and Maʿmar confirmed it for me, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam, each adding to the other’s account. They said:
“The Prophet ﷺ set out in the year of al-Hudaybiyah with a little over fourteen hundred of his Companions,
