Al-Bukhārī relates (1): Saʿīd ibn al-Rabīʿ narrated to us—ʿAlī ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us—from Yaḥyā, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Qatādah, who reported that his father said, “We set out with the Prophet ﷺ in the year of al-Ḥudaybiyyah. His Companions entered the state of iḥrām, whereas I did not.”
Al-Bukhārī also said: Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ narrated to us—Shabābah [ibn Sawwār al-Fazārī] narrated to us—Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, from his father, who said, “I actually saw the Tree; later I returned to it and could no longer recognise it.”
Mūsā narrated to us; Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us; Ṭāriq narrated to us—from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, from his father, who had been among those who pledged beneath the Tree—who said, “We went back to it the following year, but it had been concealed from us.”
Al-Bukhārī further said (3): Maḥmūd narrated to us—ʿUbayd Allāh narrated to us—from Isrāʾīl—from Ṭāriq ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said, “I went on pilgrimage and passed by some people who were praying. I asked, ‘What mosque is this?’ They replied, ‘This is the Tree where the Prophet ﷺ took the Pledge of Ridwān.’ I then went to Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab and told him. Saʿīd said, ‘My father informed me that he was among those who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ beneath the Tree. When we returned the next year we had forgotten its location and could not find it.’ He then added, ‘The Companions of Muhammad ﷺ were unable to pinpoint it, yet you claim to know it? You must be better informed than they were!’”
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both transmit this report (4) through al-Thawrī, Abū ʿAwānah, and Shabābah, all on the authority of Ṭāriq.
Al-Bukhārī also said (5): Ismāʿīl narrated to us—my brother related to me—from Sulaymān—from ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā—from ʿAbbād ibn Tamīm, who said, “On the day of al-Ḥarrah, when people were giving their pledge to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanẓalah, Ibn Zayd asked, ‘On what basis is Ibn Ḥanẓalah taking the people’s pledge?’ He was told, ‘Upon death.’ He replied, ‘I shall never pledge anyone upon that after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ He had indeed been present with the Prophet at al-Ḥudaybiyyah.”
Al-Bukhārī—along with Muslim (6)—likewise records this through several chains from ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā.
Al-Bukhārī said (7): Qutaybah [ibn Saʿīd] narrated to us—Ḥātim narrated to us—from Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd, who said, “I asked Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, ‘On what basis did you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of al-Ḥudaybiyyah?’ He replied, ‘Upon death.’”
Muslim likewise records it (8) through the narration of Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd.
