Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

In Sūrat al-Aḥqāf the Almighty says:

“And when We diverted toward you a band of the jinn to listen to the Qur’an, and when they were present they said, ‘Listen attentively.’ Then, when it was concluded, they returned to their people warning them.
They said, ‘O our people, we have heard a Book revealed after Moses, confirming what came before it; it guides to the truth and to a straight path.
O our people, respond to the Caller of Allah and believe in him; He will forgive you your sins and will protect you from a painful punishment.
But whoever does not respond to the Caller of Allah cannot escape Him on earth, nor will he have protectors besides Him; such people are in evident error.’” (al-Aḥqāf 46:29–32)

And He also says:

“Say, ‘It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, “We have heard a wondrous Qur’an
that guides to rectitude, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord.
Exalted is the Majesty of our Lord; He has taken neither consort nor child.
Yet our foolish one used to utter outrageous lies about Allah,
and we had thought that neither mankind nor jinn would ever speak a lie against Allah.
But some men from humankind used to seek protection with some men from the jinn, and they only increased them in burden.
And they thought, as you have thought, that Allah would never resurrect anyone.
We probed the heaven and found it filled with stern guards and shooting flames;
we used to sit in positions to eavesdrop, but whoever listens now finds a flaming meteor lying in wait for him.
We do not know whether evil is intended for those on earth, or whether their Lord intends for them right guidance.
Among us are the righteous and among us are less than that; we have been of various paths.
We realised that we can never frustrate Allah on earth, nor can we escape Him by fleeing.
When we heard the guidance, we believed in it; whoever believes in his Lord need fear neither loss nor oppression.
Among us are those who have submitted and among us are the deviators; those who submit have sought out true guidance,
but the deviators will be fuel for Hell.
Had they remained steadfast upon the Way, We would surely have given them abundant water,
so that We might test them thereby; but whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will thrust him into an ever-ascending torment.”’” (al-Jinn 72:1–17)

We have already explained this sūrah and the complete account at the end of Sūrat al-Aḥqāf, together with the aḥādīth related to it. Those jinn were from Nisībīn—though some reports say from Busrā—and they passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was standing in prayer with his Companions in the valley of Nakhlah on the outskirts of Makkah, and they stopped and listened to his recitation.

Later the Prophet spent an entire night with them; they asked him about matters which he commanded them to do and others he forbade, and they requested provisions. He said to them, “Every bone over which Allah’s name has been pronounced will come to you covered with ample meat, and every dung-dropping is fodder for your beasts.” He then forbade people to purify themselves with either of these, saying: “They are the provisions of your brothers among the jinn.”

He also forbade urinating in marketplaces, for they are the dwelling-places of the jinn.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Sūrat al-Raḥmān to them. Whenever he reached the verse, “Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?” (al-Raḥmān 55:13), they replied, “We deny none of Your favours, our Lord; all praise belongs to You.”

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) later commended them for this, for when he recited the sūrah to people they remained silent, so he said, “The jinn were…"
