Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Ibn Abī Ḥātim (1) also transmitted the report through Abū Naḍrah al-ʿAbdī, from Anas, with similar wording, though neither of the two Ṣaḥīḥ compilers included it.

Ibn Jarīr (2) related it as well—once through ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd and once through al-Zuhrī—both on the authority of Anas, in like manner.

I say: Zaynab bint Jaḥsh—may Allah be pleased with her—was among the earliest female Emigrants. She was rich in good works and charity. Her original name was Barrah, but the Prophet ﷺ changed it to Zaynab, and she was known by the kunya Umm al-Ḥakam. ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—said: “I have never seen a woman better in religion than Zaynab: more God-fearing, more truthful in speech, more dutiful in maintaining kinship ties, and more trustworthy and generous in charity.”

It is authentically established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (3)—as will appear in the account of the Slander—that ʿĀʾishah said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Zaynab bint Jaḥsh about me—she was the one who rivaled me among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ—yet Allah safeguarded her through piety. She replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I guard my hearing and my sight; I know nothing about her except good.’”

Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj states in his Ṣaḥīḥ (4): Maḥmūd ibn Ghīlān narrated to us, al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā al-Sīnānī narrated to us, Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us [from ʿĀʾishah bint Ṭalḥah], from ʿĀʾishah, Mother of the Believers, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “The one of you who will join me the soonest is she whose arm is the longest.” ʿĀʾishah added, “So we would stretch out our arms to see whose was longest.” She continued, “It was Zaynab who had the longest arm, because she used to work with her hands and give in charity.” Muslim alone recorded this ḥadīth.

Al-Wāqidī and other historians of Sīrah and Maghāzī (5) relate that she died in the year 20 AH. The Commander of the Believers, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—led her funeral prayer, and she was buried in al-Baqīʿ. She was the first woman for whom a covered bier was made.
