Indeed, tears have streamed unchecked from my eyes,
And my eyes are surely entitled to overflow for Saʿd.
A slain hero who lies in the battlefield—
Eyes forever brimming, ever grieving, mourn his loss.
He died upon the religion of the All-Merciful, heir to a Garden,
Among the martyrs whose delegation is the noblest of delegations.
If you have bidden us farewell and left us behind,
And now pass the night in the murky darkness of the grave,
Still you, O Saʿd, have attained a noble station,
Clad in raiment of honor and of praise.
By your verdict on the two clans of Qurayẓah—
You judged, with full intent, what Allah had decreed for them—
Your ruling matched exactly the ruling of Allah;
You did not relent when reminded of the covenant they had broken.
So if the turns of time have carried you off with those
Who traded this transitory world for its everlasting Gardens,
How excellent is the destination of the truthful when they are summoned
To Allah one day for dignity and nearness.
Section: Verses composed about the Battle of the Trench and Banū Qurayẓah
Al-Bukhārī (no. 5) said: Ḥajjāj ibn Minhāl narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit narrated that he heard al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib say: The Prophet ﷺ said to Ḥassān, “Satirize them—or stir them—for Gabriel is with you.”
Al-Bukhārī (no. 6) also said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān added, on the authority of al-Shaybānī, from ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, that the Prophet ﷺ, on the day of Qurayẓah, said to Ḥassān ibn Thābit: “Lampoon the idolaters, for Gabriel is with you.”
This report was likewise transmitted by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and al-Nasāʾī through various chains from Shuʿbah, though without the additional wording that al-Bukhārī mentioned concerning the day of Banū Qurayẓah.
Ibn Isḥāq—may Allah have mercy on him—said: Dirār ibn al-Khaṭṭāb ibn Mirdās, of Banū Muḥārib ibn Fihr, recited on the day of the Trench— and I (the author) say: this was before his acceptance of Islam— [metre: wāfir]:
