Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Aḥmad (1) said: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us, from Saʿīd. Qatādah related: Anas ibn Mālik told us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while the bier was set down before him, declared, ‘The Throne of the All-Merciful shook for him.’”

Muslim (2) recorded the same report through Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ruzzī, from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb.

Al-Bayhaqī (3) transmitted—through al-Muʿtamar ibn Sulaymān, from his father—that al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said, “The Throne of the All-Merciful shook in joy at his soul.”

Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bazzār (4) said: “Zuhayr ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq (5) informed us; Maʿmar informed us, from Qatādah, from Anas, who said:

When Saʿd’s funeral bier was lifted, the hypocrites exclaimed, ‘How light it is!’—because of the judgment he had passed on Banū Qurayẓah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about that, and he replied, ‘No; rather, the angels were carrying him.’” Its chain is sound.

Al-Bukhārī (6) said: “Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us; Ghundar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq. I heard al-Barrāʾ ibn ʿĀzib say:

A silk cloak was presented to the Prophet ﷺ. His Companions began to touch it and marvel at its softness. He said, ‘Are you astonished at how soft this is? The hand-towels of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh are better—or softer—than it.’

He added: Qatādah and al-Zuhrī also reported it; we heard it from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ.”

Aḥmad (7) said: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us, from Saʿīd—meaning Ibn Abī ʿArūbah—from Qatādah, from Anas ibn Mālik, that Ukaydir of Dūmat al-Jandal sent a cloak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, before silk was forbidden. The Prophet put it on and the people were impressed by it. He said, ‘By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, the hand-towels of Saʿd in Paradise are finer than this.’” This chain meets the criteria of the two Shaykhs, though they did not include it; al-Bukhārī mentioned it only as a suspended report (8).

Aḥmad (9) also said: “Yazīd narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; Wāqid ibn ʿAmr ibn Saʿd ibn Muʿādh related to me”—Muḥammad commented: Wāqid was among the most handsome, imposing, and tallest of people—“who said:

I went in to see Anas ibn Mālik, and he asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I replied, ‘I am Wāqid ibn ʿAmr ibn Saʿd ibn Muʿādh.’ He said, ‘You bear a striking resemblance to Saʿd,’ and then he wept—indeed, he wept abundantly.”
