so I called upon Allah, and He relieved him.”
Al-Bazzār said, “ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib is the only one who reported this.” I add: he is a narrator about whom criticism has been voiced (1).
Al-Bayhaqī (2), after mentioning the squeezing of Saʿd in the grave, recorded a singular report, saying:
“Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāfiẓ related to us; Abū al-ʿAbbās related to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār related to us; Yūnus related to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: ʿUmayyah ibn ʿAbdullāh told me that he asked some members of Saʿd’s family, ‘What have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about this?’ They answered, ‘We have been told that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about it and said, “He used to be negligent in cleansing himself from urine during purification.”’”
Al-Bukhārī (3) said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Musāwir narrated to us; Abū ʿAwanah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, who said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, ‘The Throne shook at the death of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh.’”
Al-Aʿmash (4) also transmitted—from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Jābir, from the Prophet ﷺ—the same wording. A man said to Jābir, “But al-Barrāʾ ibn ʿĀzib says that the bier shook.” He replied, “There was ill-feeling between those two clans. I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, ‘The Throne of the Most Merciful shook at the death of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh.’”
Muslim narrated it through ʿAmr al-Nāqid, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Idrīs, and Ibn Mājah through ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, both from al-Aʿmash, with the same wording, though without al-Aʿmash’s additional statement transmitted from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Jābir (5).
Aḥmad (6) said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq related to us, from Ibn Jurayj; he informed me that Abū al-Zubayr heard Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while Saʿd ibn Muʿādh’s bier lay before them, declare, “For him the Throne of the Most Merciful shook.”
Muslim (7) narrated it from ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, and al-Tirmidhī from Maḥmūd ibn Ghīlān, both through ʿAbd al-Razzāq.
Imām Aḥmad (8) likewise said: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd related to us; ʿAwf related to us; Abū Naḍrah related to us: I heard Abū Saʿīd [al-Khudrī] report from the Prophet ﷺ, “The Throne shook at the death of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh.”
Al-Nasāʾī (9) transmitted it from Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm, from Yaḥyā, with the same wording.
