Imam Aḥmad (1) said: “Abū ʿĀmir narrated to us; al-Zubayr—meaning Ibn ʿAbd Allāh—narrated to us; Rubayḥ ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Khuḍrī narrated to us, from his father who said:
‘On the Day of the Trench we said, “O Messenger of Allah, is there something we can say? Our hearts have reached our throats.” He replied:
“Yes. Say: O Allah, conceal our vulnerabilities and grant us security from our fears.”
He (the narrator) said: So Allah turned the faces of the enemy away by means of the wind, and Allah routed them by the wind.’
Ibn Abī Ḥātim also related it in his Tafsīr (3) through his father, from Abū ʿĀmir—namely al-ʿAqadī—from al-Zubayr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, the client of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, from Rubayḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Saʿīd, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd. He cited it, and this is the sound version.
Imam Aḥmad (5) also said: “Ḥusayn narrated to us—from Ibn Abī Dhʾīb—from a man of Banū Salamah—from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh—that the Prophet ﷺ came to the Mosque of the Confederates, set down his cloak, stood up with his hands outstretched and invoked against them, without praying. He then returned, invoked against them again, and performed the prayer.”
It is authentically recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (6), in the report of Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated against the Confederates, saying:
“O Allah, Revealer of the Book, Swift in reckoning, defeat the Confederates. O Allah, defeat them and shake them.”
In another wording (7): “Defeat them and grant us victory over them.”
Al-Bukhārī (8) narrated—from Qutaybah, from al-Layth, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say:
“There is no god but Allah alone; He strengthened His army, granted victory to His servant, and He alone routed the Confederates—nothing can withstand Him.”
Ibn Isḥāq (9) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions remained in the state of fear and hardship that Allah has described, because the enemy had joined forces against them…"
