“Do horsemen vault at ʿAlī like this?
Keep my companions back—leave me and them alone!
This day my honour bars me from flight,
while a keen blade crowns my helm, never blunt … ”
… until he said:
“He bowed to stones—so foolish was his mind—
whereas I, with sound judgment, worship the Lord of Muhammad.”
He (the narrator) continued: ʿAlī then came toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his face beaming with delight. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said to him, “Why did you not strip him of his coat of mail? No Arab owns a better one.” ʿAlī replied, “I struck him and he shielded himself with his private parts; I was ashamed—he is my cousin—to despoil him.”
The narrator adds: His horsemen fled in panic until they hurled themselves across the trench.
Ibn Isḥāq, as cited by al-Bayhaqī (1), relates that ʿAlī thrust his spear into the man’s collar-bone until the point emerged from his throat; he died in the trench. The idolaters then sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering ten thousand for the body. He said, “It is yours; we do not consume the price of the dead.”
Imām Aḥmad (2) reported—through Naṣr ibn Bāb, Ḥajjāj, al-Ḥakam and Miqsam—from Ibn ʿAbbās: “A man from the idolaters was killed on the Day of the Trench and money was offered for his corpse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Return his body to them, for the corpse is foul and its price is foul,’ and he would accept nothing from them.”
Al-Bayhaqī (3) likewise transmitted it, on the authority of Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Ḥajjāj—namely Ibn Arṭāʾah—from al-Ḥakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās: A man among the idolaters was killed on the Day of the Confederates; they sent word, “Send us his body and we will give you twelve thousand.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “There is no good in his body nor in its price.” Al-Tirmidhī (4) also recorded it, through Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from al-Ḥakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and declared it gharīb (solitary).
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah reported that the idolaters had specifically requested the body of Naufal ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Makhzūmī after he was slain, offering a blood-price for him. The Prophet said, “He is vile and so is his blood-money. May Allah curse him and his blood-money. We have no desire for it, yet we do not prevent you from burying him.”
Yūnus ibn Bukayr, transmitting from Ibn Isḥāq, said: “Naufal ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mughīrah al-Makhzūmī came out seeking single combat. Al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām met him, struck him, and cleft him in two, so that his sword was notched. He withdrew, reciting:
