Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Muslim likewise related it (1) through al-Qaʿnabī, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, with the same wording.

Al-Bukhārī (2) said: ʺMuslim ibn Ibrāhīm told us; Shuʿbah told us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, who said:

The Prophet ﷺ was carrying earth on the Day of the Trench until the dust covered his stomach—or: his stomach became dust-coloured—while he chanted:

By Allah, were it not for Allah we would not be guided,
Nor give in charity, nor offer the prayer.
So send down tranquillity upon us,
And make firm our feet when we meet the foe.
The haughty ones have transgressed against us;
Should they seek to plunge us into discord, we refuse!

He then raised his voice, repeating:

“We refuse! We refuse!”

Muslim also transmitted it (3) through Shuʿbah with this chain.

Al-Bukhārī went on to say (4): ʺAḥmad ibn ʿUthmān told us; Shurayḥ ibn Maslamah told us; Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf told us, from his father, from Abū Isḥāq, that al-Barāʾ reported:

On the Day of the Confederates, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dug the trench, I saw him carrying earth from it until the soil hid the skin of his belly, which was very hairy. I heard him reciting the verses of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah while he transported the earth:

O Allah, were it not for You we would not be guided,
Nor give in charity, nor offer the prayer.
So send down tranquillity upon us,
And make firm our feet when we meet the foe.
The haughty ones have transgressed against us;
Should they seek to plunge us into discord, we refuse!

He would draw out his voice on the final word.

Al-Bayhaqī states in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah (6): ʺʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdān related to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd aṣ-Ṣaffār related to us; Ismāʿīl ibn al-Faḍl al-Balkhī related to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf al-Balkhī related to us; al-Musayyab ibn Sharīk related to us, from Ziyād ibn Abī Ziyād, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Salmān, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck his pick in the trench and said:

In the Name of Allah, by Him we are guided;
Had we worshipped other than Him we would be wretched.
How excellent a Lord, how excellent a faith!”
