Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

And Ghassān, those stalwart guardians, rallied to his side against the enemy, and he in turn was their counsellor.
He cried, “Make peace—woe to you!” yet they refused; to spurn his command was sheer falsehood and slander.
They therefore tasted the bitter fruit of their deed—a grievous penalty: a camel exacted for every three of them.
Driven out, they set off toward Qaynuqāʿ, leaving behind their palms and houses.

Ibn Isḥāq notes that Simāk the Jew composed a reply to these verses, but we have purposely omitted it.

Ibn Isḥāq (1) said: Among the poetry recited about Banū al-Naḍīr is a piece by Ibn Luqaym al-ʿAbsī—though some say it was composed by Qays ibn Bahr ibn Ṭarīf al-Ashjaʿī—in the Ṭawīl metre:

My household be a ransom for a man who shall never perish,
who lodged the Jews in rugged al-Ḥasī.
They used to rest at noon amid blazing embers,
trading lofty Ahayḍab Hill for the sheltered valley.
If my surmise about Muhammad prove true,
you will see his chargers between al-Ṣalā and Yarmaram,
led by ʿAmr ibn Bahtha; they are a foe—
no living friend is comparable to a criminal.
Upon them ride warriors—flames in the fray—
brandishing the shafts of well-balanced spears;
and every fine-edged Indian blade,
inherited from the eras of ʿĀd and Jurhum.
Who will convey from me a message to Quraysh:
after those men, does any noble glory remain?
Know that their own kinsman is Muhammad—
an ancient font of generosity between al-Ḥajūn and Zamzam.
Submit to him in truth: your affairs will prosper,
and you will rise above the world to every lofty height.
A Prophet whom mercy from Allah has reached—
do not ask him about the hidden, veiled unseen.
At Badr—by my life—there was a lesson for you,
O Quraysh, beside the well whose stones were set.
The day he came with the Khazraj contingent,
advancing toward you, obedient to the Mighty, the Honoured,
aided by the Holy Spirit, striking his foe—
a Messenger from the All-Merciful, rightly guided,
a Messenger from the All-Merciful reciting His Book;
when truth shone forth, he did not falter.
I see his cause ascend in every land,
raised aloft by a firm decree Allah has ordained.

Ibn Isḥāq (2) also said: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—though Ibn Hishām remarks that a Muslim composed it and that he knows no one who attributes it to ʿAlī—recited, in the mutaqārib metre:

I have realised—and whoever is upright realises;
I am truly certain, nor do I turn away
from the well-founded speech, the decisive verses
that come from Allah, the Most Compassionate of the compassionate.
