Al-Bukhārī also reports—through the chain of Juwayriyyah ibn Asmāʾ, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ burned and cut down the date-palms of Banū al-Naḍīr at al-Buwayra. Concerning this, Ḥassān ibn Thābit composed:
(Wāfir metre)
It mattered little to the nobles of Banū Luʾayy—
that a sweeping blaze spread through al-Buwayra.
Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith replied:
(Wāfir)
May Allah keep such deeds forever alive,
may scorching fire still consume its quarters.
Soon you will learn which of us is spared,
and which of our lands the flames will harm.
Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb ibn Mālik—Allah knows best—recited the following when speaking of the banishment of Banū al-Naḍīr and the slaying of Kaʿb ibn al-Ashraf:
(Wāfir)
Their rabbis are disgraced by their own betrayal;
such are the shifting turns of time.
For they denied a Lord whose command is mighty,
whose decree is vast and sublime.
Though endowed with discernment and knowledge,
a warner from Allah had come to them—
a truthful herald who conveyed the Book
and shining signs that give light.
They said, “You have brought us nothing true;
you deserve from us only denial.”
He answered, “Indeed, I have conveyed the truth—
confirmed by every discerning mind.
Whoever follows him is guided to all that is right;
whoever rejects—let the ingrate meet his due.”
When treachery and unbelief filled their hearts,
their aversion to the truth increased.
Allah showed the Prophet a sound decision—
Allah judges and never wrongs.
He strengthened and empowered him over them;
what an excellent Helper He is!
So Kaʿb among them was left slain,
and Banū al-Naḍīr were humbled after his fall.
He lay there prone, while over him
our brandished swords were raised.
At Muḥammad’s command, in the depth of night,
he sent to Kaʿb a man Kaʿb deemed a brother, walking softly.
Kaʿb felt no misgiving; by guile he lured him down,
while his brave, trustworthy comrade won renown.
Such are Banū al-Naḍīr in an evil abode—
the Destroyer ruined them for what they earned.
On the morning the Messenger of Allah advanced unhurried,
fully aware of their state and their end.
