Conclusion of the Account of the Battle of Uḥud
Section
The events, campaigns, and detachments that occurred in this third year after the Hijrah have already been discussed, the most famous of them being the Battle of Uḥud, which took place on the fifteenth of Shawwāl. Its details have been set forth above—praise belongs to God.
During that battle Abū Yaʿlā—some say Abū ʿUmārah—Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the uncle of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), was martyred. Known as “the Lion of God and the Lion of His Messenger,” he and Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Asad had been nursed together with the Prophet by Thuwaybah, the freedwoman of Abū Lahab, as is established in the ḥadīth agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. On that basis, Ḥamzah was over fifty years old on the day he was killed—may God be pleased with him. He ranked among the bravest warriors and the foremost of the sincere, and with him a full seventy martyrs fell that day—may God be pleased with them all.
Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī states: “Yaʿlā son of Ḥamzah fathered five sons, all of whom left no descendants. He also had a daughter named ʿUmārah.”
The author adds: She is the child whom ʿAlī took up, saying to Fāṭimah, “Here is your cousin’s daughter.” ʿAlī, Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, and Jaʿfar then disputed over her guardianship, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) awarded her to her maternal aunt, Jaʿfar’s wife, declaring, “The maternal aunt stands in the place of the mother.”
In this same year ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān concluded his marriage contract with Umm Kulthūm, the daughter of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), after the death of her sister Ruqayyah. The contract was drawn up in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, and the marriage was consummated in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, as related above on the authority of al-Wāqidī.
Also in this year, says Ibn Jarīr, Fāṭimah—the daughter of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)—gave birth to al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and in the same year she conceived al-Ḥusayn—may God be pleased with them all.
