“But Ḥamzah has no women to weep for him.”
The women of the Anṣār therefore came and began to weep for Ḥamzah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ awoke and said,
“Woe to them! Have they not gone home yet? Tell them to return, and let no one weep for anyone who dies after today.”
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah relates: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the lanes of Madinah, he heard wailing and crying in the houses and asked,
“What is this?”
They replied, “These are the women of the Anṣār mourning their slain.”
He said, “But Ḥamzah has no women to weep for him,” and he sought forgiveness for him. Saʿd ibn Muʿādh, Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah, Muʿādh ibn Jabal, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah heard this, went to their homes, gathered every mourner and weeping woman in Madinah, and declared, “By Allah, you shall not weep for the Anṣār’s dead until you first weep for the Prophet’s uncle ﷺ, for he has said that he has no mourners in Madinah.” They allege that it was ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah who brought the women together.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard of this he asked, “What is this?” He was informed of what the Anṣār had told their women. He prayed for their forgiveness, spoke well of them, and said,
“This is not what I intended, and I do not like wailing,”
then he forbade it.
Ibn Luhayʿah transmitted the same report from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah (1) said: While the Muslims were suffering from their wounds, the hypocrites began their plotting, trying to turn people away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to distress the believers. The treachery of the Jews became evident, and hypocrisy boiled up in Madinah like a cauldron. The Jews said, “Had he been a prophet they would not have prevailed over him, nor would he have suffered such losses; rather, he is merely seeking kingship—victory is sometimes his and sometimes against him.” The hypocrites echoed the same words and told the Muslims, “Had you obeyed us, you would not have been struck as you were.”
Allah then revealed Qur’anic verses regarding the obedience of those who obeyed, the hypocrisy of the hypocrites, and consolation for the believers concerning those who had been killed. He said: “When you left your family at daybreak to post the believers at their battle stations—and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing” (Āl ʿImrān 3:121), and the verses that follow, as we have explained in the Tafsīr (2). All praise and bounty belong to Allah.
Account of the Prophet’s ﷺ departure with his Companions—despite their wounds and injuries—in pursuit of Abū Sufyān, in order to strike fear into him and his men, until he reached Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad (3), which lies eight miles from Madinah.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah (4) said, after narrating the events of Uḥud and mentioning the Prophet’s ﷺ return to Madinah:
