The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said:
“If you have wielded your sword well, Sahl ibn Ḥunayf, Abū Dujānah, ʿĀṣim ibn Thābit, and al-Ḥārith ibn al-Ṣammah have wielded theirs just as well.”
Ibn Hishām (1) remarks: The sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ referred to here was Dhū al-Faqār.
He continues: Some scholars related to me—on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ—that on the Day of Uḥud a herald proclaimed, “There is no sword but Dhū al-Faqār, and no youth but ʿAlī.” (2)
He also said: Certain men of knowledge informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAlī, “The idolaters will never deal us a blow like this again until Allah grants us victory.”
Ibn Isḥāq (3) states: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by the dwellings of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal and heard wailing and lamentation for their slain. Tears filled his blessed eyes and he wept, saying, “But Ḥamzah has no women to weep for him.” When Saʿd ibn Muʿādh and Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr returned to the house of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, they ordered their womenfolk to gird themselves and go out to mourn the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Ḥakīm ibn Ḥakīm ibn ʿAbbād ibn Ḥanīf related to me, from certain men of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard their lament for Ḥamzah he came out to them while they were at the door of his mosque, weeping for him, and said:
“Return, may Allah have mercy on you; you have already consoled one another with your own grief.”
He adds: On that day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade wailing, as Ibn Hishām reports.
What Ibn Isḥāq has mentioned here is disconnected in its chain of transmission, part of it being mursal.
Imām Aḥmad, however, transmitted it with a continuous chain. He said: “Zayd ibn Ḥabbāb narrated to us; ʾUsāmah ibn Zayd narrated to me; Nāfiʿ narrated to me from Ibn ʿUmar that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from Uḥud and the women of the Anṣār began weeping over their slain husbands, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘But Ḥamzah has no women to weep for him.’
He then lay down, and when he awoke they were still weeping. He said, ‘Are they now weeping and lamenting Ḥamzah?’” This chain meets the criteria set by Muslim. (5)
Ibn Mājah (6) likewise transmitted it—from Hārūn ibn Saʿīd, from Ibn Wahb, from ʾUsāmah ibn Zayd al-Laythī, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by the women of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal who were weeping for their dead on the Day of Uḥud, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
