She burst into a wail, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A husband occupies a most special place in a woman’s heart.” He said this after observing her composure when told of her brother and her uncle, and her outcry when told of her husband.
Ibn Mājah (1) records—through Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad al-Farwī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jahsh, from his father, from Ḥamnah bint Jahsh—that she was informed: “Your brother has been killed.” She replied, “We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.” They then said, “Your husband has been killed.” She exclaimed, “Oh, what grief!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remarked, “A husband lays claim to a share of a woman’s affection that nothing else can match!”
Ibn Isḥāq (2) relates—through ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī ʿAwn, from Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a woman of Banū Dīnār whose husband, brother, and father had all been slain alongside him at Uḥud. When their deaths were announced to her she asked, “What has become of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” They replied, “He is well, O mother of so-and-so; by Allah’s grace he is as you would wish.” She said, “Show him to me so that I may look upon him.” They pointed him out to her; once she saw him she declared, “Every calamity after you is trivial.”
Ibn Hishām notes that the word jallal can denote either something great or something small; here it means “small.” Imruʾ al-Qays (3) said:
“For slaying the lord of Banū Asad …
Indeed, everything apart from it is jallal,”
that is, insignificant and slight.
Ibn Isḥāq (4) continues: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached his home he handed his sword to his daughter Fāṭimah and said, “My dear girl, wash the blood from this sword, for by Allah it has proved true to me today.” ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib then gave her his sword, saying, “And this one—wash its blood away too, for by Allah it has proved true today as well.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ added, “If you have fought well, so too have Sahl ibn Ḥunayf and Abū Dujānah.”
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah records elsewhere: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw ʿAlī’s sword stained with blood he said, “If you have fought valiantly, then so have ʿĀṣim ibn Thābit ibn Abī al-Aqlaḥ, al-Ḥārith ibn al-Ṣammah, and Sahl ibn Ḥunayf.”
Al-Bayhaqī (5) transmits—through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, and ʿIkrimah—from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: On the day of Uḥud ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib came with his sword bent and said to Fāṭimah, “Take this sword; how praiseworthy it is, for it has satisfied me.”
