I recognized the voice as surely as I know that Allah created me, as plainly as I distinguish night from day, and every hair on my body bristled.
Muhammad ibn Isḥāq (1) reports—through Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“When your brothers were struck down at Uḥud, Allah placed their souls inside the crops of green birds. They drink from the rivers of Paradise, eat of its fruits, and lodge in golden lamps suspended beneath the Throne. When they experienced the sweetness of their food and drink and the comfort of their resting-place, they said, ‘Who will convey to our companions that we are alive in Paradise, receiving provision, so that they will not shrink from battle nor grow indifferent to jihad?’
Allah, exalted is He, said, ‘I shall convey it for you.’
So Allah revealed in His Book: ‘Do not think that those who have been killed in the path of Allah are dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, well provided for’ (Āl ʿImrān 3:169).”
Muslim and al-Bayhaqī (2) likewise transmit—from Abū Muʿāwiyah, through al-Aʿmash, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Murrah, from Masrūq—who said:
We asked ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd about this verse: ‘Do not think that those who have been killed in the path of Allah are dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, well provided for.’ He replied, “We too asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he said: ‘Their souls are like green birds, roaming freely in Paradise wherever they wish, then returning to lamps suspended from the Throne.’”
He continued:
“While they were in that state, your Lord looked upon them and said, ‘Ask of Me whatever you wish.’ They said, ‘Our Lord, what should we ask of You when we wander through Paradise wherever we please?’ But when they realized that they would not be excused from asking, they said, ‘We ask You to return our souls to our bodies in the world so that we may be killed again in Your cause.’ When He saw that this was all they desired, He left them as they were.”
Section: The Number of the Martyrs
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah (4) states: The total number of those martyred at Uḥud from among the Emigrants and the Helpers was forty-nine men.
Yet in the authentic ḥadīth recorded by al-Bukhārī (5) from al-Barāʾ it is affirmed that seventy Muslims were killed—Allah knows best.
Qatādah relates from Anas (6): Seventy of the Helpers were killed at Uḥud, seventy at Biʾr Maʿūnah, and seventy at al-Yamāmah (7).
