Aḥmad (1) relates: Yaʿqūb narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah told me, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say—whenever the Companions who fell at Uḥud were mentioned:
“By Allah, I would have loved to be left lying with my companions at the foot of the mountain.”
Aḥmad alone transmits this report.
Al-Bayhaqī (2) also narrates—through ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Furwah, from Qaṭan ibn Wahb, from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, from Abū Hurayrah—that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was returning from Uḥud he passed by Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr, who lay slain on the roadside. He paused beside him, supplicated for him, and then recited: “Among the believers are men who have been true to the covenant they made with Allah” (al-Aḥzāb 33:23).
He then said, “I bear witness that these are martyrs in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. Go to them and visit them; by Him in whose hand is my soul, no one will greet them until the Day of Resurrection without their returning his greeting.” This ḥadīth is gharīb, and it is also reported from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr in mursal form.
Al-Bayhaqī (3) likewise transmits—through Mūsā ibn Yaʿqūb, from ʿAbbād ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Prophet ﷺ used to visit the graves of the martyrs. Whenever he reached the mouth of the pass he would say, “Peace be upon you for the patience you showed; how excellent is the final abode!” After the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Bakr practised this, followed by ʿUmar and then ʿUthmān.
Al-Wāqidī (5) states: The Prophet ﷺ visited them every year, and whenever he entered the pass he would say, “Peace be upon you for the patience you showed; how excellent is the final abode!” Abū Bakr then did likewise each year, followed by ʿUmar and ʿUthmān. Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, also used to come; she would weep at their graves and pray for them. Saʿd would greet them, then turn to his companions and say, “Will you not salute a people who return your greeting?” He additionally recorded visits by Abū Saʿīd, Abū Hurayrah, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, and Umm Salamah—may Allah be pleased with them all.
Ibn Abī’d-Dunyā (7) reports: Ibrāhīm told me; al-Ḥakam ibn Nāfiʿ told me; al-ʿAṭṭāf ibn Khālid narrated to us; my aunt related:
“One day I rode out to the graves of the martyrs—she would visit them regularly. I dismounted at the grave of Ḥamzah, prayed there as long as Allah willed, and the valley was silent—no caller and no reply—save a young boy standing, holding my mount’s head. When I finished my prayer I raised my hand and said, ‘Peace be upon you.’ I then heard the greeting returned to me, coming from beneath the earth.”
