From Abū al-Khayr, on the authority of ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, who said:
Eight years after the Battle of Uḥud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the funeral prayer over the martyrs of Uḥud, bidding farewell to both the living and the dead. He then ascended the pulpit and said:
“I am going on ahead of you to the Pool; I shall testify on your behalf. Your appointment is at the Basin, and I can see it from where I stand. I do not fear that you will associate partners with Allah after I am gone; what I fear for you (1) is that you will compete with one another for this world.”
He (ʿUqbah) added, “That was the last time I ever looked upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Al-Bukhārī records this report in several other places, as do Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasāʾī (2) through the transmission of Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb with similar wording.
Al-Umawī narrates: My father related to me; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmārah narrated to us; from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, who said:
ʿĀʾishah said, “We set out in the last part of the night, following the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ toward Uḥud, hoping for news. When dawn broke we saw a man, his waist wrapped, chanting lines of verse:
‘Wait a moment—let the bearer witness the clash of arms.’
We looked and recognized him as Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr. After a while a camel appeared, bearing a woman between two sacks.
“We approached and discovered that she was the wife of ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ. We asked her, ‘What is the news?’ She replied, ‘Allah has protected the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and has taken from the believers martyrs:
“Allah repelled those who disbelieved; in their rage they gained no good. Allah spared the believers from fighting, and Allah is Strong, Mighty.” (Q 33:25)
“She then said to her camel, ‘Kneel,’ and dismounted. We asked, ‘Whom are you carrying?’ She answered, ‘My brother and my husband.’
Ibn Isḥāq (5) relates: Ṣafiyyah bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib came forward wishing to look at him (6)—he was her full brother. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her son, al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām,
‘Meet her and turn her back so that she does not see what has been done to her brother.’
“He went and said, ‘Mother, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to return.’ She replied, ‘Why should I? I have heard that my brother was mutilated—and that is for Allah’s sake. Whatever has happened pleases us; I will seek its reward and be patient, if Allah wills.’ When al-Zubayr conveyed this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said,
‘Let her proceed.’
“She came, looked at him, prayed over him, proclaimed, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return,’ and sought forgiveness for him.”
Ibn Isḥāq (7) adds: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered that he be buried, and with him was buried his sister’s son, ʿAbd Allah ibn Jahsh—whose mother
