He said to his two companions, “Our comrades have not dealt fairly with us.” (1)
Abū Sufyān then came forward and declared, “Exalt Hubal!”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Say: ‘Allah is higher and more majestic.’”
So they said, “Allah is higher and more majestic.”
Abū Sufyān continued, “We have al-ʿUzzā, whereas you have no ʿUzzā.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Say: ‘Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector.’”
Abū Sufyān added, “A day to answer for the day of Badr—one day for us and one against us; a day when we grieve and a day when we rejoice: Ḥanẓalah for Ḥanẓalah, and so-and-so for so-and-so.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “They are not the same. Our slain are alive, receiving provision, while your dead are in the Fire being punished.”
Abū Sufyān said, “Some mutilation has been done among the people. By Allah, it was not with the consent of any notable among us. I neither commanded it nor forbade it; I neither liked it nor disliked it; it neither displeased me nor pleased me.”
They looked and found that Ḥamzah’s belly had been ripped open, and that Hind had taken his liver and chewed it but had been unable to swallow it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “Did she eat any of it?” They said, “No.” He said, “Allah would never put any part of Ḥamzah in the Fire.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then placed Ḥamzah and offered the funeral prayer over him. A man from the Anṣār was brought and laid beside him, and he prayed over him; the Anṣārī was then removed while Ḥamzah remained. Another was brought and laid beside Ḥamzah, and he prayed over him; that man was then removed while Ḥamzah remained—until he had prayed over him seventy times that day. Aḥmad alone reported this, though its chain is also weak because of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib; Allah knows best.
The version narrated by al-Bukhārī (2) is sounder. He said: “Qutaybah related to us; al-Layth related to us; from Ibn Shihāb; from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik, that Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to place two of the martyrs of Uḥud in a single garment, then say, ‘Which of them knew more Qur’an by heart?’ When one of them was pointed out to him (3), he would put him first in the grave and say, ‘I am a witness over these on the Day of Resurrection.’ He ordered that they be buried in their blood, with no washing and no funeral prayer.” Al-Bukhārī alone recorded this; Muslim did not.
The compilers of the Sunan (4) also transmitted it through al-Layth ibn Saʿd.
Aḥmad (5) said: “Muḥammad—that is, Ibn Jaʿfar—related to us; Shuʿbah related to us; I heard ʿAbd Rabbih report from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Jābir, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah, that the Prophet ﷺ said regarding the martyrs of Uḥud: ‘Every wound—or every drop of blood—will emit the fragrance of musk on the Day of Resurrection,’ and he did not perform the funeral prayer over them.”
It is firmly established that he later prayed over them many years afterward, shortly before his death, as al-Bukhārī (6) said: “Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm related to us; Zakariyyā ibn ʿAddī related to us; [Ibn] al-Mubārak related to us; from Ḥaywah; from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb …”
