On the authority of Hishām, from ʿUrwah, who said: My father, al-Zubayr, told me that on the Day of Uḥud a woman came hurrying forward. When she was about to look out over the slain, the Prophet ﷺ disliked that she should see them and said, “The woman, the woman!”
Al-Zubayr continued: I realized it was my mother Ṣafiyyah, so I rushed toward her and reached her before she got to the dead. She struck me in the chest—for she was a resolute woman—and said, “Away with you; may you find no ground to stand on!”
I said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has strictly ordered you.” She stopped, then produced two cloths she had brought and said, “These two garments are for my brother Ḥamzah. News of his killing has reached me, so shroud him in them.”
We brought the two garments intending to wrap Ḥamzah in them, but beside him lay an Anṣārī who had been treated as Ḥamzah had been. We felt it improper and shameful to shroud Ḥamzah in two garments while the Anṣārī had none. So we said, “One cloth for Ḥamzah and one for the Anṣārī.” We measured them and found one larger than the other, so we drew lots between them and shrouded each man in the cloth that fell to him. (1)

Ibn Isḥāq (2) said: Someone I do not suspect narrated to me, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that Ḥamzah be covered with a cloak, then prayed over him and pronounced seven takbīrs. The slain were then brought and placed near Ḥamzah, and he prayed over them and over him with them, until he had prayed for him seventy-two times. This report is singular and its chain is weak.
Al-Suhaylī (3) said: None of the scholars of the major centers has adopted this view.
Imām Aḥmad (4) said: ʿAffān related to us; Ḥammād related to us; ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib related to us, from al-Shaʿbī, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said: On the Day of Uḥud the women stood behind the Muslims finishing off the wounded among the idolaters. Had I sworn that day, I would have hoped to be truthful in saying that none of us desired the worldly life—until Allah revealed: “Among you are those who desire the world, and among you are those who desire the Hereafter; then He turned you back from them so that He might test you” (Āl ʿImrān 3:152).
When the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disobeyed what they had been commanded, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was left with [only nine]: seven from the Anṣār and two (5) from Quraysh, and he was the tenth of them. When they pressed upon him he said, “May Allah have mercy on the man who drives them away from us!”
(He said: A man from the Anṣār then stood and fought for a while until he was killed. When they pressed upon him again he said, “May Allah have mercy on the man who drives them away from us!”) (6)
He kept saying this until the seven were killed, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—
