Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Zurqī, on the authority of his father, related:

When the Day of Uḥud came and the idolaters had turned back, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Form straight rows so that I may extol my Lord, Exalted is He.” They lined up behind him and he declared:

“O Allah, to You belongs all praise—every bit of it. O Allah, none can withhold what You spread forth, nor extend what You withhold; none can guide whom You send astray, nor mislead whom You guide; none can give what You withhold, nor withhold what You give; none can draw near whom You keep distant, nor distance whom You draw near.

O Allah, shower upon us Your blessings, mercy, bounty, and provision. O Allah, I ask You for the everlasting bliss that never changes or vanishes. O Allah, I ask You for bliss on the Day of Want (1) and security on the Day of Fear. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have granted us and the evil of what You have withheld from us.

O Allah, endear faith to us and beautify it in our hearts; make us detest disbelief, defiance, and disobedience, and place us among those who are rightly guided. O Allah, cause us to die as Muslims, give us life as Muslims, and join us to the righteous—without disgrace and without trial.

O Allah, fight the unbelievers who belie Your messengers and bar others from Your path; unleash upon them Your wrath and Your punishment. O Allah, fight the unbelievers among the People of the Book—O God of Truth!”

Al-Nasā’ī also recorded this supplication in “Amal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah” (2) through Ziyād ibn Ayyūb, from Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ayman, from ʿUbayd ibn Rifāʿah, from his father.

Ibn Isḥāq (3) said: When the people had finished tending to their dead, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah al-Māzinī—of Banū al-Najjār—told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Who will go and see what has become of Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ? Is he among the living or among the dead?”

An Anṣārī man replied, “I will.” He went and found Saʿd wounded among the slain, still breathing faintly. He said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to find out whether you are alive or dead.”

Saʿd answered, “I am numbered with the dead. Convey my greetings of peace to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and say to him: ‘May Allah reward you on our behalf with the best reward ever bestowed upon a prophet for his nation.’ Convey my greetings to your people and say to them: ‘Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ says to you: you have no excuse before Allah if harm reaches your Prophet while even one of you can bat an eyelid.’ ”

The man said, “I did not leave him until he died, then I returned to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what had happened.”

I say: The man who searched for Saʿd among the slain was Muḥammad ibn Maslamah, according to Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Wāqidī (4). He relates that Muḥammad ibn Maslamah called out to him twice without an answer; only when he said, “The Messenger of Allah has sent me to find out about you,” did Saʿd respond in a faint voice and give this message.

In Al-Adab al-Mufrad by al-Bukhari (no. 699) and by al-Hakim (vol. 3: 23–24). Al-Haythami, in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (vol. 6: 122), states that it was narrated by Ahmad and al-Bazzar, and that its narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections. Any declaration of it as weak stems from al-Dhahabi’s overzealous criticism (may Allah have mercy on him). (1) al-ʿayla: poverty.
