from his father Ibrāhīm, that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf was once brought some food while he was fasting. He said, “Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr was killed, and he was better than I; he was shrouded in a single cloak—when we covered his head his feet were exposed, and when we covered his feet his head was exposed. (I think he also said:) And Ḥamzah was killed, and he too was better than I. Yet the world has been spread out before us”—or, “We have been given of this world what we have been given”—“and we fear (1) that our good deeds have been hastened for us here.” He then wept until he left the food untouched. Al-Bukhārī alone recorded this report.
Al-Bukhārī also said (2): Aḥmad ibn Yūnus related to us; Zuhayr related to us; al-Aʿmash related to us, from Shaqīq, from Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt, who said:
“We emigrated with the Prophet ﷺ seeking the Face of Allah, and so our reward became due from Allah. Some of us have passed on— or, he said, have gone—without having taken anything of their reward. Among them was Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr: he was killed on the Day of Uḥud and left nothing but a coarse cloth; when we covered his head with it, his feet protruded, and when we covered his feet, his head protruded. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Cover his head with it and place idhkhir grass over his feet.’ Others of us have lived on until their fruit has ripened, and they are now harvesting it.”
The rest of the compilers (3)—apart from Ibn Mājah—transmitted this ḥadīth as well through various chains from al-Aʿmash.
Al-Bukhārī further said (4): ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Saʿīd related to us; Abū Usāmah related to us; from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah who said:
“When the Day of Uḥud came, the idolaters were routed. Then Satan—may Allah curse him—cried out: ‘Servants of Allah, mind your rear!’ Those at the front turned back and fought those at the rear. Hudhayfah looked—and there before him was his father, al-Yamān. He cried, ‘Servants of Allah, my father! my father!’ but, she said, by Allah, they did not hold back until they had killed him. Hudhayfah then said, ‘May Allah forgive you.’ ʿUrwah remarked, ‘By Allah, goodness continued to remain in Hudhayfah until he met Allah ﷿.’”
I say: The cause of this was that al-Yamān and Thābit ibn Waqsh had stayed in the forts with the women because of their old age and weakness. They said, “Only the time a donkey needs to drink remains of our lives.” So they came down to attend the battle, but the road they took brought them toward the side of the idolaters. Thābit was killed by the idolaters, while al-Yamān was mistakenly killed by the Muslims. Hudhayfah gave his father’s blood-money in charity to the Muslims and did not blame any of them, for their excuse was clear.

Ibn Isḥāq (5) said: On that day the eye of Qatādah ibn al-Nuʿmān (6) was struck until it fell onto his cheek. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed it back with his own hand, and it became the soundest and sharpest of his two eyes.
