Al-Wāqidī relates (1) through Ibn Abī Sabrah, from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Furwah, from Abū al-Ḥuwayrith, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, who said:
“I heard one of the Emigrants say: ‘I was present at Uḥud. I saw arrows coming from every direction while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in their very midst; every one of them was turned aside from him. I also heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī that day proclaiming, “Show me Muhammad—may I not survive if he survives!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was right beside him with no one else there, yet he walked past him. Safwān ibn Umayyah later reproached him, and he replied, “By Allah, I never saw him. I swear by Allah he is protected from us. Four of us set out, pledging and covenanting to kill him, but we could not get near him.”’
Al-Wāqidī says (2): What is firmly established with us (3) is that the one who struck the cheek of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was Ibn Qamiʾah, while the one who struck his lip and broke his incisor was ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ—as Ibn Isḥāq has already reported—and that the incisor that was broken for him ﷺ was the lower right.
Ibn Isḥāq (4) reports: Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān told me, from someone who related it from Saʿd ibn [Abī] Waqqāṣ, who said, “Never did I long to kill anyone as I longed to kill ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ. To my knowledge he was ill-tempered and despised among his people, and the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sufficed me concerning him: ‘The wrath of Allah has intensified against the one who has bloodied His Messenger’s face.’”
ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrates (6): Maʿmar related to us from al-Zuhrī, and ʿUthmān al-Jazarī from Maqsam, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoked against ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ on the Day of Uḥud, after he had broken his incisor and bloodied his face, saying, “O Allah, do not let a full year pass over him before he dies a disbeliever.” Less than a year had elapsed before he died a disbeliever, destined for the Fire.
Abū Sulaymān al-Jūzajānī states: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad told me; Ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr ibn Ḥazm narrated to me, from his father, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Ḥanīf, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ treated his facial wound on the Day of Uḥud with an old piece of bone.
This is an unusual ḥadīth I found in the middle of the Umayyad’s “Book of the Campaigns” under the account of Uḥud.
When ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qamiʾah had inflicted what he did upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he returned proclaiming, “I have killed Muhammad!” On that day the devil—the billy-goat of al-ʿAqabah—cried out in the loudest voice, “Behold, Muhammad has been killed!” A tremendous shock seized the Muslims, many of whom believed it. They resolved to fight for the stronghold of Islam until they died upon what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died upon
