He then called out, “Is the son of Abū Quḥāfah among the people?”
The Prophet replied, “Do not answer him.”
Abū Sufyān asked, “Is the son of al-Khaṭṭāb among the people?”
The Prophet said, “Those men have been killed [1]; had they been alive they would have answered.” ʿUmar could no longer restrain himself and cried, “You lie, enemy of Allah! By Allah, Allah has left for you what will grieve you [2].”
Abū Sufyān shouted, “Exalt Hubal!”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Answer him.”
They asked, “What shall we say?”
He replied, “Say: ‘Allah is higher and more majestic.’”
Abū Sufyān said, “We have al-ʿUzzā, while you have no ʿUzzā.”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Answer him.”
They asked, “What shall we say?”
He said, “Say: ‘Allah is our Protector, whereas you have no protector.’”
Abū Sufyān added, “A day to repay the day of Badr; the fortunes of war alternate. You will find some of your dead mutilated—I neither ordered it nor do I regret it.”
(This wording is reported by al-Bukhārī alone and not by Muslim.)
Imam Aḥmad [3] said: Ḥasan ibn Mūsā [4] narrated to us, Zuhayr narrated to us, Abū Isḥāq narrated to us that al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib said:
On the Day of Uḥud the Messenger of Allah ﷺ put ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jubayr in charge of the archers, who numbered fifty men. He stationed them in a fixed position and said, “If you see birds snatching us away, do not leave your post until I send for you; [and if you see us prevailing over the enemy and crushing them, do not leave your post until I send for you].”
They routed the enemy, and—by Allah—I saw the women running up the mountain with their shins and anklets exposed as they lifted their garments. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jubayr’s men cried, “Booty, people! Booty! Your comrades have prevailed; what are you waiting for?” ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jubayr said, “Have you forgotten [5] what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told you?” They replied, “By Allah, we will go to the people and take our share of the booty.” When they joined the others their faces were turned back, and they came retreating; it was then that the Messenger kept calling them from the rear. Only twelve men remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the enemy killed seventy of us.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions had taken one hundred and forty of the idolaters at Badr—seventy prisoners and seventy slain. Abū Sufyān now called out three times, “Is Muhammad among the people?” and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them to answer. Then he said three times, “Is the son of Abū Quḥāfah among the people?” and three times, “Is the son of al-Khaṭṭāb among the people?” Turning to his own men he said, “Those men have been killed; you have been spared having to face them.”
ʿUmar could not restrain himself and said, “By Allah, you lie, enemy of Allah! Those you have named are all alive, and Allah has left for you what will distress you [6].”
Abū Sufyān retorted, “A day to repay the day of Badr; the fortunes of war …”
