The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
"The heaven has groaned, and it is only right that it should groan, for there is not a space as wide as four fingers without an angel prostrating there. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much; you would take no delight in women upon your beds, and you would rush out to the high places crying to Allah, Exalted and Majestic."
Hearing this, Abū Dharr declared, "By Allah, I wish I were a tree that is cut down!"
Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah also transmitted this report through the chain of Isrāʾīl. Al-Tirmidhī remarked, "It is ḥasan gharīb, and it is likewise related as a statement halted at Abū Dharr."
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī said: Ḥusayn ibn ʿArafah al-Miṣrī narrated to us; ʿUrwah ibn Marwān al-ʿIrqī narrated to us; ʿUbayd-Allāh ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Mālik, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who reported that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
"In the seven heavens there is not a spot the size of a footstep, a handspan, or a palm without an angel standing, an angel prostrating, or an angel bowing. When the Day of Resurrection arrives they will all say: ‘We have not worshipped You as You truly deserve, though we have never associated anything with You.’"
These two ḥadiths show that no place in the seven heavens is empty of angels: some stand forever, some bow forever, some prostrate forever, while others perform forms of worship known only to Allah. They are unceasing in their devotion, glorification, remembrance, and in the tasks their Lord has assigned them. Each has his station with his Lord, as He, Exalted, says: "There is not one of us but has a known station; we are indeed those who line up in ranks; we are indeed those who constantly glorify Him" (Q 37:164-166).
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—also said, "Will you not form rows as the angels form rows before their Lord?" They asked, "How do they form rows before their Lord?" He replied, "They complete the front rows and close the gaps within the rows."
He further said, "We have been favored above all people in three matters: the earth has been made for us a place of worship; its soil has been made a means of purification; and our rows in prayer have been made like the rows of the angels."
