Letter Jīm
Jābir ibn Khālid ibn Masʿūd ibn ʿAbd al-Ashhal ibn Ḥārithah ibn Dīnār ibn al-Najjār, of the Banū al-Najjār;
Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Riʾāb ibn al-Nuʿmān ibn Sinān ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿAdī ibn Ghanm ibn Kaʿb ibn Salamah, of the clan of Salamah—he was one of those who pledged at al-ʿAqabah.
I say: As for Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥarām al-Salamī as well, al-Bukhārī includes him among them in the Musnad (1) on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, who said: “On the Day of Badr I used to draw water for my companions.” This chain meets Muslim’s conditions, yet Muḥammad ibn Saʿd (3) reports: “I mentioned this ḥadīth to Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar—meaning al-Wāqidī—who said, ‘This is an error traceable to the people of Iraq,’ and he rejected the idea that Jābir was present at Badr.
Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (4) said: “Rūḥ ibn ʿUbadah narrated to us; Zakariyyā ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Abū al-Zubayr narrated that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: ‘I took part in nineteen campaigns with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, but I was present at neither Badr nor Uḥud; my father kept me back. After my father was killed at Uḥud, I never again held back from any expedition of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.’”
Muslim (5) also transmitted it from Abū Khaythamah, from Rūḥ (6).
