His brother Muṣʿab had said to Abū Yasar—the very man who had taken him captive—what has already been mentioned. Abū ʿAzīz thereupon said to him,
“My brother! Is this the advice you give concerning me?”
Muṣʿab replied, “He is my brother, not you.”
Their mother then inquired about the highest sum ever paid to ransom a man of Quraysh. She was told, “Four thousand dirhams.” She therefore sent four thousand dirhams and ransomed him with it.
I say: This Abū ʿAzīz’s given name was Zurārah, as Ibn al-Athīr records in Ghābat al-Ṣaḥābah, and Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ includes him among the Companions. He and Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr were full brothers, and they had another full brother, Abū al-Rūm ibn ʿUmayr. Those who maintain that he was killed as an unbeliever at Uḥud are mistaken; that was Abū ʿUzzah, as will be explained in its proper place. Allah knows best.
Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr related to me from Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿd ibn Zurārah, who said:
“When the captives were brought in, Sawdah bint Zamʿah, the Prophet’s ﷺ wife, was with the family of ʿAfrāʾ, sharing their mourning for ʿAwf and Muʿawwidh, the sons of ʿAfrāʾ. This was before the command of hijāb had been imposed upon them.
“Sawdah said: ‘By Allah, I was still with them when we were told, “The captives have arrived.” I returned to my house, where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was present, and there in a corner sat Abū Yazīd Suhayl ibn ʿAmr, his hands bound to his neck with a rope.
“‘By Allah, I could not control myself when I saw Abū Yazīd in that state; I exclaimed, “O Abū Yazīd! Have you surrendered your hands? Why did you not die with honor?”
“‘By Allah, nothing roused me from that outburst except the voice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from inside the house: “Sawdah, are you inciting against Allah and His Messenger?”
“‘I replied, “O Messenger of Allah, by Him Who sent you with the truth, I could not restrain myself when I saw Abū Yazīd with his hands tied to his neck; I said what I said.”’
“The remaining details of the captives in Madinah—the manner of their ransom and the amounts—will be set out later, if Allah wills.”
The Negus’s joy, may Allah grant him mercy, at the news of Badr
