One of them had been taken from the one-fifth share on the Day of Badr. This explicitly refutes Abū ʿUbayd’s claim that the spoils of Badr were not subjected to the khums; Allah knows best. Rather, they were indeed subjected to the one-fifth levy, as affirmed by al-Bukhārī, Ibn Jarīr, and others—and this is the sound, preponderant view. Allah knows best.
Section: The Prophet’s ﷺ return from Badr to Madinah, and the events that occurred on the journey as he proceeded—supported and victorious—by the favor of his Lord; may the most excellent blessings and peace be upon him.
We have already noted that the battle took place on Friday, the seventeenth of Ramadan, in the second year after the Hijrah.
Both Ṣaḥīḥs (1) relate that whenever he prevailed over a people he would remain on the battlefield for three days. Accordingly, he ﷺ stayed on the plain of Badr for three days, as mentioned earlier, and departed on the night of Monday. He mounted his she-camel, stood beside the Badr well, and reproached those who had been dragged into it, as previously described. He then set out ﷺ with the prisoners and the abundant spoils, having dispatched before him two heralds to Madinah announcing the victory, triumph, and mastery over those who associated partners with Allah, denied Him, and disbelieved in Him: ʿAbd Allah ibn Rawāḥah to the upper part of the city, and Zayd ibn Ḥārithah to the lower part.
Usāmah ibn Zayd said: The news reached us just after we had levelled the [earth] (2) over Ruqayyah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Her husband, ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān—may Allah be pleased with him—had stayed behind to nurse her at the Prophet’s instruction, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted him his share and reward in Badr.
Usāmah continued: When my father, Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, arrived, I went to him while he was standing in the prayer-ground, surrounded by people, proclaiming: “ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah has been killed, Shaybah ibn Rabīʿah has been killed, Abū Jahl ibn Hishām, Zamʿah ibn al-Aswad, Abū al-Bukhtarī al-ʿĀṣ ibn Hishām, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and Nubayh and Munabbih, the sons of al-Ḥajjāj, have all been killed.”
I asked, “Father, is this true?” He replied, “Yes, by Allah, my son.”
Al-Bayhaqī (3) narrated—through the isnād of Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Usāmah ibn Zayd—that the Prophet ﷺ had left ʿUthmān and Usāmah ibn Zayd behind to care for the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and that Zayd ibn Ḥārithah returned riding al-ʿAḍbāʾ, the she-camel.
