Muslim likewise recorded the report through Hudbah ibn Khālid, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, with the same wording.
Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān ibn Thābit composed the following verses:
I knew Zaynab’s dwelling at the sandy ridge—
like Revelation’s script on a shining scroll;
The winds had passed it round, and every somber cloud
of the Wasmī rains poured down in torrents.
Its traces then grew tattered, the place lay desolate
once its beloved occupant had gone.
So set aside your daily recollection,
and cool the burning of a grieving heart.
Proclaim, with speech unsullied and sincere—
not the falsehood of a lying tongue—
what the Sovereign wrought for us at Badr’s dawn,
the share He granted us against the idolaters.
That morning their host loomed like Mount Ḥirā’,
its sides appearing as daylight waned;
We met their ranks with our own array—
jungle lions, beardless youths and grey-haired men—
standing before Muhammad, giving him support
against the foe in the blaze of battle,
With polished, razor-keen swords in their hands
and veterans whose heels were scarred by war.
The noble sons of al-Aws were there, upheld
by the sons of al-Najjār, steadfast in firm faith.
We left Abū Jahl lying slain,
and ʿUtbah we abandoned among the pits;
Shaybah we left among men of lofty line—
noble whenever pedigree is reckoned.
The Messenger of Allah called out to them
after we had flung them like cast-off carcasses into the well:
“Have you not found my words to be true?
Allah’s decree seizes the hearts!”
They gave no answer; yet had they answered they would have said,
“You spoke the truth, and your judgment was sound.”
Ibn Isḥāq also said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the dead be thrown into the well, ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah was seized and dragged there. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then looked—as I have been informed—at the face of Abū Ḥudhayfah ibn ʿUtbah and saw that he was downcast, his color changed. He ﷺ said, “O Abū Ḥudhayfah, has something concerning your father troubled your heart?”—or words to that effect. He replied, “No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I have never doubted my father nor his fate; but I had known him to possess sound judgment, forbearance, and merit….”
