ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two rakʿahs on the day he was given the glad tidings of Abū Jahl’s head.
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā recorded: My father narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to us; Mujālid informed us, from al-Shaʿbī, that a man said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “I passed by Badr and saw a man coming up out of the ground. Another man kept striking him with a mace until he vanished into the earth; then he would emerge again and the same was done to him repeatedly.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is Abū Jahl ibn Hishām, undergoing punishment until the Day of Resurrection.”
Al-Umawī said in his Maghāzī: I heard my father relate—through Mujālid ibn Saʿīd, from ʿĀmir—that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “I saw a man seated at Badr, and another striking his head with an iron rod until he sank into the earth.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “That is Abū Jahl. An angel has been appointed over him who does that to him whenever he appears; he will writhe in that torment until the Day of Resurrection.”
Al-Bukhārī transmitted: ʿUbayd ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from Hishām, from his father, who said: al-Zubayr stated, “On the Day of Badr I encountered ʿUbaydah ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ. He was fully armoured so that only his eyes were visible, and he was nicknamed Abū Dhāt al-Kirsh. He called out, ‘I am Abū Dhāt al-Kirsh!’ I charged him with a short spear (ʿanaza), thrust it into his eye, and he died.” Hishām added: I was informed that al-Zubayr said, “I planted my foot on him and strained until, with great effort, I managed to pull it out, and both of its tips had bent.” ʿUrwah continued: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him for the spear and he gave it to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, al-Zubayr retrieved it. Abū Bakr then requested it, so he handed it over. When Abū Bakr died, ʿUmar asked for it and he gave it to him. When ʿUmar passed away, al-Zubayr reclaimed it. Then ʿUthmān asked for it and he gave it to him. When ʿUthmān was killed it came into the possession of the family of ʿAlī; later ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr requested it, and it remained with him until he was killed.
Ibn Hishām related: Abū ʿUbaydah and others versed in the campaigns told me that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said to Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ, as he passed by him, “I sense that you harbour something in your heart; you think that I killed your father. Had I slain him, I would not seek to excuse myself to you. What I did kill was my maternal uncle al-ʿĀṣ ibn Hishām ibn al-Mughīrah. As for your father, I passed by him while he was …”
