I struck at him with a short sword of mine and hit his hand, causing his weapon to fly off. I seized it and kept striking him until he was dead.
I then went out and came to the Prophet ﷺ, as though I were hardly touching the ground. When I informed him, he said, “By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity?”—repeating it three times. I replied, “By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity.” He walked out with me, stood over the body and said, “Praise be to Allah who has disgraced you, enemy of Allah! This man was the Pharaoh of this community.”
In another wording Ibn Masʿūd added, “He allotted me his sword as my share.”
Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī related—through al-Thawrī, from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah—that Ibn Masʿūd said: “I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Badr and said, ‘I have killed Abū Jahl.’ He asked, ‘By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity?’ I answered, ‘By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity,’ two or three times. The Prophet ﷺ then proclaimed, ‘Allāhu akbar! Praise be to Allah who fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and routed the confederates single-handedly.’ Then he said, ‘Go and show him to me.’ I went and showed him, whereupon he said, ‘This is the Pharaoh of this community.’” Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī also transmitted this through Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī.
Al-Wāqidī reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood over the place where the sons of ʿAfrāʾ lay and said, “May Allah have mercy on the sons of ʿAfrāʾ; they shared in killing the Pharaoh of this community and the chief of the leaders of unbelief.” He was asked, “Messenger of Allah, who else killed him along with them?” He replied, “The angels—and Ibn Masʿūd also shared in killing him.” Al-Bayhaqī narrated this.
Al-Bayhaqī further related—on the authority of al-Ḥākim, al-Aṣamm, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār, Yūnus ibn Bukayr, ʿAnbasah ibn al-Azhar, and Abū Isḥāq—that when the bearer of good news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Badr with the report of Abū Jahl’s death, the Prophet had him swear three times by Allah, besides Whom there is no deity, “Did you really see him slain?” When he had sworn, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell in prostration.
Al-Bayhaqī also transmitted—through Abū Nuʿaym, from Salamah ibn Rajāʾ, from al-Shaʿthāʾ, a woman of Banū Asad, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two rakʿahs: one when he was given the glad tidings of victory, and another when the head of Abū Jahl was brought.
Ibn Mājah likewise reported: Abū Bishr Bakr ibn Khalaf narrated to us; Salamah ibn Rajāʾ said, “al-Shaʿthāʾ told me, from …”
